I like living in big cities so I don't think I'd want to live in a smaller city, but there are plenty of great ones that I like and are wonderful places to visit. Madison, Charleston, Savannah, Burlington, Buffalo, Ann Arbor, Santa Cruz, Portland (Maine), Syracuse, Knoxville, Albuquerque, and Honolulu are all nice places. I've heard good things about Omaha and Des Moines as well.

I love Santa Fe and I'm very happy and stimulated here. There is as much to do here as some cities ten times its size. Great little city. Some of us just go through phases. I spent most of my twenties and early thirties living in the Boston and Seattle metros. It was perfect for me then but neither really hold any appeal to me now as far as living. I probably would have been bored here in Santa Fe in my early twenties but at 35 its' perfect for me now.

It's funny cause growing up in a metro of 80,000 in Iowa I always though of Des Moines as a big city cause it had a metro of 370,000 and a dozen or so buildings that were 20, 30, 45 stories tall.

I moved to Chicago though and everyone giggled at Des Moines and though it was a little town.

My hometown has gone from 80,000 to 135,000 and Des Moines from 370,000 to 570,000, but after being in Chicago so long I see them as a breath of fresh air. Fairly small and manageable.

My short list of cities I could live in are Chicago, San Fran, NYC, etc. I also throw Des Moines right in the mix though, just cause I know how those mid-tier metros are nothing to sneeze at. The quality of life there is extremely high, people have lots of discretionary income, great schools, low stress, low crime, no traffic, etc.

People look at the excitement and power of the big cities, but often overlook the QOL and ease on your body and mind of living in a smaller place.
