I want you to tell me. What is the best city for trying to live the American dream? If you wanted to become famous what city would you go to to get known? If someone wanted to be an model, artist, actor/actress what city should they go to?
For an actress/actor: Los Angeles
For an artist or model: New York
This is based on where the masses go, looking for their break. BTW, artists seem to live in lots of places, such as "cute" towns in Maine and New Mexico, for example.

Chicago is for those who want NYC on the cheap, and/or a functioning/vibrant/livable Detroit.
It has the best and worst aspects of what you would expect of a big city (in fact, I think it perfectly fits the streotype of an American city), but not for any specific aspirations.
But with regards to your aspirations, I agree with the poster that said Los Angeles and NYC.
Los Angeles or NYC is where you should go... Just do it. Later on if you are established you can go somewhere else. So which is your preference? Both are far and away above most other cities. The good thing in the U.S. is there is a choice. If you were in England...you are pretty much stuck with London. If you are in France, you are pretty much stuck with Paris. And if you are in Vietnam well, you need to change countries altogether.

Certainly not unheard of though. Even if they are more successful in one, many of that mindset are multi disciplinary as to not put all their eggs in one basket. Many novelists also write theater/screen plays... or many actors also model or dance...etc.
But even then, NYC or LA are by far your best bets for creative/entertainment industries.
