Reading a couple of articles this past weekend brought to my attention the large number of shootings in certain NYC precincts. Here are some to note:

NYC murder rate down, but 5 tough police precincts in Brooklyn, Bronx and Queens tally 25% of the city's shootings * - NY Daily News

Quote:
A Daily News analysis of crime statistics found that gunplay is sharply segregated, with residents of East New York, Brooklyn, dodging bullets with a regularity that would be incomprehensible to upper East Siders.

“Gunshots in this area’s just like hearing the doorbell,” said Sade Kirkland, 21, a makeup artist who lives in East New York, where the 75th Precinct has recorded 28 people shot this year.

“People across the street are killing each other for nonsense.”

“I’ve heard a few gunshots at night,” said Beckford, a technician. “I’ve called 911...

I know other neighbors have called, too.”

He said the gunfire threatens to drive out the law-abiding.

“The working-class people are moving out,” he said. “When my lease runs out in September, I’m gone.”

At the corner of Sutphin and Linden Blvds. in Jamaica, Queens, where 26-year-old Theodore Thomas was shot to death March 25, people were not surprised to learn that the local precinct, the 113th, was No. 5 in the city for shooting victims.

“Someone’s always getting shot around here,” said Margaret

This is the reality some people in these hoods face. The 67th precinct in East Flatbush leads the city with 29 shootings, followed by perennial leader East New York in Brooklyn's 75th precinct with 28, then East Tremont and Mott Haven, both in the south Bronx, with 26 and 23 respectively, rounded out by 50 cent's South Jamaica hood with 21.

So my question, is 30 shootings 5 months considered alot? What are the numbers for LA, SF, CHI, DET, DC, PHI etc etc ..Are any of you alarmed by the rise in gun violence in the country's premier city, despite the lower murder rate?

Mods if this does not belong here, please put in appropriate place.

We're very isolated when it comes to murders. 66% of murders happen in 20% of the 77 official neighborhoods. Splitting it down more:

The Good

Districts with 16% of the city's population had 1% of the murders (1.6/100,000).

Districts with 33% of the city's population dealt with 5% of the murders (2.5/100,000).

Districts with 50% of the city's population dealt with 11% of the murders (3.6/100,000).

The Bad

Districts with 2% of the city's population dealt with 12% of the murders (70.0/100,000).

Districts with 5% of the city's population dealt with 21% of the murders (66.7/100,000)

Districts with 9% of the city's population dealt with 32% of the murders (55.2/100,000).

Districts with 17% of the city's population dealt with 50% of the murders.

Districts with 32% of the city's population dealt with 75% of the murders (37.9/100,000).

Districts with 40% of the city's population dealt with 84% of the murders.

Well, on one hand, 28 shootings in 5 months is too many for any precinct...but my question would be how many people live in that area? That's probably the most relevant number to use when judging the total number of shootings.

Yeah, that's exactly what I thought. East NY has upwards of 170,000 people, but the south Bronx precincts have anywhere from 40,000 to 70,000, so it's higher per capita there.

Nice breakdown of Chicago, Chi60.

East New York is home to nearly 100,000 people according to the 75th Precinct website and Wikipedia.

30 shootings in 5 months? I wish Chicago was even remotely close to that figure. We will have 12-16 shootings this weekend.

Do you have a link for NYC precinct populations? I could do a breakdown of NYC similar to Chi60 if I have population numbers.
