I really like Houston's skyline. Its very modern looking and well balanced.

New York looks too archaic and I agree the Chicago Spire looks terrible as it is totally out of place with the rest of the skyline. It wouldn't be as bad if there were some other projects to complement it.

Theres much more to this argument than simply propping up 8 or 9 decently designed buildings and calling it a skyline.

SF,Boston,Philly,Chi,NYC have skylines. Atl,Hous,Dallas,Miami have a mish-mosh collection of vertical suburban office parks posing as skylines.

You need a legitimate center city or downtown to host a skyline, not 8 lane highways tearing through the middle of town so suburbanites can get in and out of their workplace, in and out of that city with the cute gleaming "skyline".

Actually I think the Chicago Spire is very beautiful - not as beautiful as the Burj Dubai though (Burj Dubai Official Website) and http://www.motherjones.com/commentary/columns/2005/07/dubai_01_598x533.jpg (broken link)

Regarding the original question (best skyline in the USA): I'd vote for NYC. Best in the world though is either Hong Kong or Shanghai. Hong Kong's building are not quite so tall, but there are a LOT of them in a small area, and with the mountains in the background it's an extremely beautiful setting (http://www.db.com/careers/en/images/iStock_000000074767Large_rdax_500x375.jpg (broken link)). In addition the nighttime lighting is spectacular (http://borget.info/wp-content/upload...line-night.jpg)

Shanghai has not as many buildings (yet) but they are very different and interesting and the nighttime lighting gives the place a very futuristic look (http://www.physik.uni-rostock.de/clu...at%20night.JPG). In addition, there are MANY new (some of them very tall) structures going up so in the future it's skyline is going to VERY impressive.

PS - Regarding these buildings being out of scale with the other nearby structures - remember that the giants of an earlier time (the Empire State Building/Chrysler Building etc) were once out of scale with their neighbor as well. Over time the average size of nearby buildings grew up to more or less match the scale of the monsters that had gone up in their midst.

i think Baltimore's skyline will be pretty great in the future, here are a few projects

and theres so many more in the 20 - 50 story range that are still in the works
and Tons of little projects, Baltimore's skyline won't be recognizable by 2020

as for future skylines, i see miami blowing up even further once the housing crash levels out.
