I'd disagree with NO being number one (unless it's for overall culture and history) and with Chicago being that close to NYC. NYC has dropped off, but most of the top jazz musicians still live and play in NYC and LA. Speaking of which, LA is in "The rest"? So many top musicians live and play here. Hard to see that.
I know, "the rest". A jazz backwater that somehow produced Charles Mingus, Chet Baker, Dexter Gordon, Hampton Hawes Buddy Collette, Marshall Royal and Chico Hamilton. And it continues to support one of the only full-time straight ahead jazz programming radio stations left in the country.
Many people refuse to acknowledge elite musicians are drawn to Los Angeles for studio work, including scoring for film. Not just jazz but every genre, notably, classical. And while they live here, it’s not as if they never play outside a studio.
Oh well. This is one of those misconceptions that refuses to die.

Not true....and who calls it NAWLINS?? Besides tourists.....
Sad case is that NYC has a Jazz scene largely because of record label/connection location. If you think that NOLA is swing jazz, then u should truly visit more of the city than the touristy French Quarter Cher....

Finally! LA's jazz scene is crazy underrated, and this chart suggests it is nothing to sneeze at. It also suggest that New York is well above New Orleans in this category.
Jazz includes a vast span of music, from popular standards and big band swing to hard-bop and electrified fusion and acid jazz. New York tops the jazz rankings (with a Popularity Index score of 29). L.A. follows close behind in second (with a score of 24). Chicago is a distant third (4.9), Boston fourth (4.7) and San Francisco fifth (3.2). Rounding out the top 10 are Philadelphia (3.0), Oakland (2.5), Seattle 2.4), Nashville (2.3), and Atlanta (2.2).

Quantity is one thing but those places will never be the origin of this genre (New Orleans) regardless of how you slice it. New Orleans already owns this.

And they are larger cities so of course the numbers will be larger but is Jazz apart of the culture of LA and New York? Hell No, they jazz up funerals in Nola .Heck they jazz in neighborhoods and in the streets. They use the block, street corner, or curb side as a stage. The same can't be said for La
Or nyc.
To the previous two posters: nobody is denying the Nola's rightful place. But to disregard Los Angeles' jazz past and present as "the rest", a la the "Professor and Maryanne", is flat out ignorant.
City A does not deserve to be on the same list as Cities X, Y & Z - aka I feel like being an insufferable snob who makes unimportant declarations
City A is hands down better than City B when it comes to Completely Subjective Category #1
*OR* City A is just not on City B's level when it comes to Completely Subjective Category #1
Tier 1 = A & B - Tier 2 = X, Y & Z - Tier 3 = THE REST - aka how dare you even think The Rest belong in this ridiculous discussion regarding Utterly Meaningless Nonsense
*OR* Gaps in Tiers when it comes to utterly meaningless nonsense, example:
Tier Ranking of Cities w/ the highest % of Foreign Born, Mixed Race, High School Graduate Gazillionaire Households who like 4 Seasons OR Mountains & Nature but don't like East Coast Rap OR Los Angeles' Skyline: City A
City B
City C
City D
City E
City F
THE REST
