That's fine. I'm saying that most people think New York before Chicago when they think of organized crime. I mean, NYC has how many mob movies compared to Chicago?
What does one having more movies in regards to the other have to do with anything?
The thing is NYC is almost know for everything. NYC has everything. It's just when the word Chicago comes up people usually list Chicago Bulls, Michael Jordan, gangsters, skyscrapers and jazz/blue as their first thoughts of the cities. With NYC it's less prominent: people think of other things first before they thing of gangsters in NYC.
I think it was Stan Lee that said that "Metropolis" is New York City by day, and "Gotham" is New York City by night.
I thought it was Frank Miller that said that. Either way, I think that is the correct answer.
The other quote I have heard was from (I think) Denny O'Neil who said that "Batman’s Gotham City is Manhattan below Fourteenth Street at eleven minutes past midnight on the coldest night in November."
Gotham City can be either NYC or Chicago. Those are the only 2 cities IMHO that can qualify as Gotham in the US. They used Chicago as the setting for Gotham City in the 2nd Dark Knight film back in 08', and they used NYC(and a collection of other older US cities) for the setting of Gotham City in Dark Knight Rises. Metropolis can either be NYC and Chicago also. But Metropolis is more likely NYC.
Because of the Dark Knight Rises movie and the Man of Steel teaser, it got me thinking. Which city do you feel represnts Gotham City and Metropolis the most?
For Gotham City I would say Chicago, followed by NYC. Chicago a little more because of it's organized crime history (not saying NYC didn't have it, it's just Chicago is more well known for it) and because the city is far more corrupt than NYC.
As for Metropolis I think San Francisco, NYC or Toronto. I feel like Toronto might be the best match.
I always felt Metropolis was Chicago and Gotham was NYC because Metropolis always looked like a city that's huge and inland and Gotham has been historically NYC's nickname for some time now. Although I think the reverse could be true as well.
No San Francisco is neither of these, the personality for these two cities is very unlike San Francisco or anything in California. I consider that a good thing, crime is not something any city should be proud of.

Because most people learn the little they do know about American mafia from watching movies. Most people are not going to Barnes and Noble to pick up the latest mafia chronicle written by George Anastasia (a Philadelphian, btw).

I wouldn't say that. I'd instead say that people think of NYC first for many different things. When people say "ballet," they think NYC. When they hear "fashion," they think NYC. When they hear "banking," they think NYC. When they think "subway," they think NYC. Likewise, when they hear "mafia," they think Lucky Luciano, Bugsy, Meyer Lansky, Dutch Schultz, John Gotti, Five Families, the Godfather, etc. Just because NYC is known for many different things does not make the association with any one thing any less prominent. By your logic, people should think of Charlotte before New York when they think "finance" because that's basically all it's known for whereas finance is only one of many things for which NYC is known.

I agree that to me, Chicago comes to mind when I think about organized crime. It's not the only city, as NYC, Boston and to some extent LA/Las Vegas are also "mob cities" in my mind.
I guess I feel like Boston / Chicago are the two cities most shaped by their history with organized crime.
I'm surprised at so many people saying Chicago for Gotham. I think that just shows how influential the Nolan movies have been. IMO, Gotham is definitely an east coast city. New York is the most obvious, but possibly Philly as well. In the DC world it is an older US city. Also the architecture is mostly art deco or Gothic, lots of dark alleys and intricate buildings with gargoyles and spires. Chicago IMO is a "cleaner" looking skyline...more straight lines.
