The biggest city that gets a surprisingly low amount of City-Data flare is Detroit (even though it gets plenty of negative attention, I don't see its city boosters peek out all that often).
Louisville is the first city that came to mind when I saw the title of this thread. For a largish metro area, you don't really hear about it that much. It doesn't help that the city doesn't have pro sports.

People are quick to point out the bad, but Detroit's good is often overlooked.
I never hear Detroit mentioned in Music discussions, in travel discussions, food, skyline, etc etc
