Once you move here you will notice that almost every person here to a man was born and raised here. No one moves here except for a very few due to job or spouse reasons.
Except for my roommate who moved here from North Carolina... and the ~8,000 other people who moved here from other parts of the U.S. and the world in just the last year...

In fact, a current Philly poster JM02 moved here from Houston..

You literally don't know what you are talking about...

Don't let DC's growth fool you, those people don't care about DC or wanting to live there. They moved there for those large bloated salaries, which are DC's most attractive incentive to get people to live there. You act like we're talking about a Paris or London here, we're talking about DC. LOL

Very few people care for DC, even fewer care about wanting to live there. I don't see the sophistication in money laundering nor do I see the sophistication of taking $400B from a state then using that same money to create tax incentives to lure that states company headquarters away like what was done with Hilton and Northrop Gruman. It's pathetic. Then again I'm talking to DC folk, they cant even distinguish the difference between Maggianos and real highend Italian food LOL.

Surprised DC is doing so poorly and I say that as someone who didn’t particularly enjoy the city.

I could see an argument for DC, SF or Boston.

Honestly, the only thing that seems clear to me is that Philly is probably the least sophisticated. Not a bad thing. It has lots of old money areas and institutions (Rittenhouse Sq, Main Line, Art Museum, etc). But overall, it has more of a blue collar feel. It lacks the "new economy" finance/tech yuppie feel of Boston or San Francisco and isn’t the nation’s capital.

SF- does well in both old money and new tech money. Lots of wealthy old money ammenities. On the downside, somewhat of a hippie anti-establishment feel.

Bos- old school money, Beacon Hill, Harvard. Some new money, but not on a scale like SF. Most polished of the cities (No tenderloin). On the downside, Boston can feel more parochial than the other cities.

DC- DC isn't London or Paris. But, thanks to federal subsidies and the nature of being the capital, the city punches above its weight when it comes to culture (state dinners, embassy events.) Probably only NYC can match it for the formal wear type events.

On the downside, DC the actual city is still a work in progress. The city doesn’t have all of the urban amenities of Bos or SF. No core high end shopping, mediocre restaurants, the high end residential is generally tucked away in Upper NW. Not on display the way it is in Bos/SF.

Right! This list is hilarious! As Caymon mention, no city does state dinners, embassy parties and recpetions, Smithsonian endowment parties, museum functions, political gatherings, President's Kennedy Center Honors, White House Correspondence dinners, etc.. like DC. DC's haterism is at an all time high.

really? do you think DC is the only city with Museums?, and other citys have political gatherings, like the DNC, RNC, Republican National Governers association, DNGA, ect are not held in DC. As well as state gatherings, which collectivly are just as important.

The nouveau riche aren't nearly as sophisticated as they think they are. For that reason, the list can only be correct with Washington DC at the bottom.

It's not even a comparison! The Smithsonian Complex versus........ what? Plus DC has 60 other non Smithsonian Museums in a two mile area like the Holocaust Museum, which has an incredible endowment and also hosts many events. Let's take museums out of the equation for a moment and look at embassies. 300 embassies that host parties and cultural gatherings all year long. The embassy of Brazil just had a pre-Olympic party. What about media? DC is home to CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, BET, NPR, Radio Free Asia, CSPAN, BBC, Al Jezeera, Discover Channel, National Geographic, etc.... Each of these media outlets hosts parties throughout the city. 100's of Think tanks, Associations, world institutions like the IMF, World Bank, etc... How can DC not lead this list. I didn't even mention politcial organizations.
