Up to a point. If it's far up enough to where it's outside of commuting distance, it starts looking like Hazzard County. There's some interesting pockets in the mountains outside of L.A.
Yes, generally Im talking about hilly areas in urban araes. Not the Hazzard County variety. LOL
Those stairway counts might be a little suspect--I see that they list Oakland as only having one, whereas there are quite a few. And Oakland and Berkeley really ought to be counted with San Francisco. The Path Wanderers of Berkeley publish a stairway map. But it's interesting nonetheless.
When my mother came to visit San Francisco for the first time, she said that San Francisco reminded her of Pittsburgh because of the hills. We thought that was kind of odd, but I see her point.
In terms of public staircases:
1. Pittsburgh 117
2. Los Angeles 89
3. Seattle 84
4. San Francisco 79
And similar to San Francisco, Pittsburgh's hills are densely populated.
So I declare the winner to be Pittsburgh.
Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I just saw these numbers and had to mention Cincinnati again. Acording to the City of Cincinnati, "There are nearly 400 sets of City hillside stairways (not including those within the City Parks or Recreation properties) which serve the residents, visitors and commuters in the City of Cincinnati."
Those two quick searches will show you just how hilly and beautiful Austin really is. I have some incredible shots from throughout the city but honestly uploading pictures on this site is a pain especially from a phone. Austin is definitely a contender.
