A friend and I had disussion over which city had the harshest winter Chicago or New York City?
I said the Winters in each city are about the same. She said New York City Winters are much worse than Chicago, due to New York City being near Canada.
So, Which City Chicago or New York City has the harshest Winters?
Chicago is colder on average and definitely gets larger temp swings because it's in the middle of the continent which is more volitile. NYC tends to get more huge snowstorms when they happen (certainly not all the time). Chicago normally just gets snows of a few inches, and rarely sees a 10" storm or larger. Chicago had their record setting "epic" snowfall a few years ago, but to put it in contrast NYC has seen 6 storms of that size just since the mid 1990's. I love storms, I really wish we'd get more huge ones like the east coast.
Chicago winters are noticeably colder, since they frequently get temps of 10 degrees or even below 0 in the dead of winter. However, NYC does get larger snowstorms. The warm Atlantic makes NYC (and all other cities on the Atlantic coast) much warmer than they are supposed to be based on their latitude.
