Which city do you think has more regional, national, and international name recognition? List some things about either city that you think puts it over the top of the other in name recognition. Tourist sites, politics, companies, schools, healthcare systems, history, events, sports, anything it takes to pick one
T.O. Not a knock on Philly either but Toronto is one of the worlds fastest emerging cities (about 150 skyscrapers under construction and population growth of 100,000 a year for the GTA) and it's created a popular reputation for itself internationally. Not that it matters but it's also my former home and at this point tied for my second favorite North American city with Chicago and San Francisco.

I would put Toronto somewhere between San Francisco and NYC in the name recognition category.
This.
City Data as a forum is really into things like diversity, few places in the world compare favorably against Toronto there. Pound for pound it's a multicultural place and a nirvana for anyone that likes cosmopolitan places.
I wouldn't call Toronto Canada's NYC, but it is certainly Canada's number 1 city... which certainly gives it prominence and greater name recognition over Philadelphia.
Two large North American cities. One more historical and likely was known much more in the world previously but has become more overshadowed, to the extent of being overshadowed I don't really know, the other a surging Canadian city that IMO will solidly replace Chicago as the Great Lakes most important metropolis but not by much.
It's 2012, the world has 7B people now and things are a lot different than they were in 1940, how different? Let's let this thread ensue to find out.
I think Los Angeles vs Toronto would be more interesting.
Los Angeles mops the floor with Toronto when it comes to name recognition.
