Which metropolis is overall more desirable place to live because of the income, housing, burbs, nabes, education attainment, yada yada.

It is fair to look at the metropolis, dissect it into city, county, or any metric that falls inside the CSA [metrop. division, metro statistical area, city, county, borough, nabes, towns, CDP].

There are stats but that is only part of the question, remember what one may find desirable- you may or may not agree.

Well if you look at OVERALL stats the Bay Area is clearly wealthier, more educated, and has more expensive real estate so in that sense you can make an argument that it's more desirable based on stats. The Tri-State area will have a greater range overall, more wealth but also more poverty.

If I wasn't from the Bay Area I'd probably choose the Tri-State area because of the city atmosphere, summer beach scene, and proximity to other cities. But the Bay Area is my home and I feel the most comfortable here with all my family and friends. Although there are some things I may take for granted now and not appreciate like the weather and scenery.

Autumn is so spectacular in Scarsdale and Darien. It's unfortunate I married a Bostonian and the only places she wants to live are Chicago or Boston. Before I couldn't live there because I work in aerospace/defense contracting and now because my spouse thinks NY is too stressful. My dreams been to live in Manhattan, all my life. I've lived in Boston, DC, Miami, and Seattle so far and want that chaos city and my home in Scarsdale next to that chaotic city.

That's like saying Kuwait or Qatar are more desirable than the U.S. because they have a higher GDP per capita.

Fair points, though Sav makes some fair and valid points. Like all things most comes down to personal preferance

For me I today prefer Philly as its my home to anyplace else (with all it's pluses and minuses). NYC is probably my second choice and the Bay is among my 3 or 4 favorite places/cities in the US

The Bay offers a ton of great things as does NYC but as the question states - What is your personal preferance

My point is that you have to account for the fact that the Tri-State Area is three times as large as the Bay Area, so no, the median income will not be as high, even though the area has more concentrated wealth on an absolute scale. It would be like saying that the U.S. is less desirable overall than Kuwait or Luxembourg because of cities like Tuskegee, Alabama.

I tend to lean away from Philly because it is home. I would recommend it for other people, but I personally do not want to see high school classmates every time I enter a Wawa. It's the smallest big city on earth.

Well, NYC obviously just for the sheer variety. In DC and other cities, there's really no "fashion industry" even though there are designers. There's really no "art/film industry" even though there are artists and filmmakers there. In NYC, you have so many different industries and crowds, and that's probably what I like most about it.

Clearly. And its interesting that the Bay Area is also more racially diverse as well.
