I would describe New York City as more jaw-dropping and mind-blowing than beautiful. New York City makes you feel very, very small.
Exactly. When I visit NYC, I find it to be impressive and mind blowing, but not beautiful. I imagine it's kind of like Tokyo, really impressive but not particularly beautiful, although NYC is more beautiful than Tokyo.
Being born and raised in San Francisco, I have to give the nod to my hometown. It is beautiful- even in the more rundown areas. San Francisco, like most major cities, has rundown/high crime neighborhoods, but there is even charm in those neighborhoods. Fore example, the Western Addition, home to many of the city's homicides, has many beautiful Victorian style homes. The Mission District is largely run down yet has impressive murals on every other street. Hunters Point, universally viewed the as the most rundown and dangerous neighborhood in the entire city has beautiful views of the San Francisco Bay, the Bay Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge. Few cities can make this claim to the same extent as San Francisco.
San Francisco is quite possibly the most beautiful city in the world (in my opinion). I love the mix of eras and colors and topography and vistas--with parks and landmarks and vegetation always around the corner or on the horizon. That pic pWright posted with the TransAmerica tower at the rear really gets at the kinds of jaw-dropping juxtapositions of color and scale and style you get in SF, that I personally don't believe is matched anywhere else in the world. Paris is maybe "prettier," but its beauty is much more reserved; and Edinburgh is jaw-dropping in its visual splendor, but it's much less colorful.
San Francisco draws the nicest line in my opinion between classy and flamboyant beauty.

I think you're absolutely right, but there's nothing quite so wonderful as feeling small in New York City. It will probably always be my favorite U.S. destination.
And yes, I may be prejudiced, but I don't think cities get any prettier than this:
