Every city has a crime problem, that's not going to stop anyone, trust me. A news anchor was beat to death in Little Rock, Arkansas recently, does that mean the city is ridden with crime? Not to mention when I went to Houston, downtown on a Saturday it was covered with nothing but crackheads and bassheads everywhere, trying to sell me crap or cop some change... it made Chicago look like the Hamptons.

There are 15,500 murders in our country every year, you think this is really going to ruin an entire area of 10 million people? I dont' think 3 murders is going to wake up an entire nation that a huge metro area has a crime problem. This city obviously has a crime problem in certain south and west side neighborhoods. That aside, 85% of the whole metro area is doing ok as far as crime goes. Even 75% of the residents within the city of Chicago are living in areas that only contain 25% of the total murders. It's not like we walk over corpses to get to work.
A man guned down his girlfriend in her driveway in Southwest Houston a few days ago - should I cancel my trip?

The Theater District is a safe area but the area near the George R. Brown Convention Center is a bit scary at night. Most of the attractions are in the Theater District so there really is no reason for anyone to be in the George R. Brown Convention Center area at night unless it's after a basketball game at the Toyota Center.

Expect that to change with everything they are building around there. Especially with the tall luxurious apartment going up right by the convention center.

Were you trying to find fall colors in the summer? Now the nightlife is a different story and it depends where you are at. However Houston's nightlife is more spread out than Chicago's.
