Will houston surpass chicago as the third largest city (living, state, better)

If the cities you mentioned hold their currently density levels whether it is low or high or suburban or urban, than every city except Atlanta would pass Houston. Atlanta is very spread out outside the city. A bit more than Houston. But cities do not have those large limits just to increase it's population. It's for the tax base. Trust me, if Chicago, Boston, or Detroit could could annex, they would. But that's yet another reason why looking at city populations to is irrelevant when judging a city's true size.

Yeah we grow horizontally instead of vertically. Unfortunately the horizontal growth never seems to stop like the vertical growth does. Life just isn't fair.
did you read the part of the article that said: "while sun-belt cities such as DFW, atlanta, and houston are growing much faster" that was an interesting part. much faster as in more than twice as fast? those were my favorite facts in that article
I think the point he's making is that Houston can't just catch the population that Chicago is at now to overtake Chicago. It's going to need more than that.
Who cares about houston. chicago has more people then houston in only half the square miles. houston is so spread out it only has 3,828 per quare mile spread out over 579 square miles. chicago has 12,649 per square mile spread out over 227 square miles. houston will never have the density of chicago. chicagos suburbs are more dense then houston. it would take five minneapolis's and 5 stpauls to have the land that one houston has. maybe houston should go ahead and annex dallas sense its already so big.
eh houston and chicago should be more worried bout miami competing with them on a "powerful" city or "population" scale over the next 50 years... plus it starting to go against the sprawl and "manhattanize" very fast.

Pretty stupid. Neiman Marcus got it roots in Texas. Countless Fortune 500 companies have their HQ's in the South. Houston has the 2nd largest contigious museum district outside of NYC. Just dumb.
