Who do you think have the worst reputation? New Yorkers always get a bad rap for being aggressive, San Franciscans for being smug, Angelenos for being vapid, Washingtonians for being stuffy, etc. When I travel I notice really specific reactions when people say they are from some of these places. Who do you think has the worst reputation (derserved or undeserved)? Where you live, is there a backlash against transplants from those places?

I think people from the Northeast in general have a reputation for being standoffish and arrogant...at least in the south. I grew up in southwest VA and when someone from "up north" would move to my corner of VA most people would immediately be skeptical of them. Most of the transplants were good people...there were just a lot of misconceptions of people from the northeast.

Residents of New York, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia generally seem to be the most hated people in the U.S. Personally, I've had mostly good experience with the people of those three fine cities.

It has to be Philadelphia. Just scroll through the threads on this website. There are plenty of cities that are bashed, such as Detroit, but there residents are not bashed. Philadelphia on the other hand get bashed for its people being loud, aggressive, and violent.

In some circles it'd be San Francisco. The entire population is often portrayed as being snobby effeminate limousine liberals running a dictatorial nanny state. Never mind the middle-class Chinese population that makes up the west-side or Hispanics in the Mission or blacks in the southern neighborhoods as being a part of the city--it just takes this one white liberal stereotype to make the Fox News crowd fume angrily in unison. See also to a lesser extent the perception of people in Seattle and Portland these days...

Los Angeles people often have a bad rep as well in the West, but most people I meet from LA are usually surprisingly chill for being from the second largest city in the US. I mean I hate LAX with a passion, but even at that crapshoot of an airport everyone is pretty friendly...

I agree with Jayp, in the real world, it's usually residents of New York, Philadelphia and LA that get the worst rep. Undeserved, if I may say so, as a native Philadelphian dating my third New Yorker, with several friends who are native Angelenos.

I agree with Deezus that San Fran has a rep for having snobby, effeminate inhabitants, a solid 4th on the list of most despised. 5th would probably be Boston or maybe New Orleans.
