I can agree Detroit, NYC and Philly. But Boston and Chicago are not among the top 5 dirtiest in the U.S. An arguement can be made they do not deserve to be the top 5 cleanest, but they are for sure not the top 5 dirtiest.

Dirtiest for me:

1. New York City
2. New Orleans
3. Detroit
4. Los Angeles
5. Memphis

Cleanest:

1. San Diego
2. DC
3. Honolulu
4. Chicago
5. Boston
Absolutely agreed, the only change I would make would be putting San Francisco in the #2 dirtiest spot, push the rest down and push Memphis out of the top 5.

Yeah I cant believe I forgot Dallas, it's extremely clean. I haven't been to Minneapolis but have heard it's pretty clean too, so might as well add them both in and make it a "big seven" of the clean world.

I wouldn't say that New Orleans and Memphis were cleaner than Chicago and Boston if they built 70 Storied Solid GOLD Skyscrapers all over New Orleans and Memphis TN I just hardly ever think about New Orleans and Memphis...however I would say that LA and SF were cleaner after you counter - balance the beautiful sections against the sections of the cities with the HOMELESSNESS POPULATION in it.....Sorry that I lost all credibility ....

Not true, Philly has a prevailing layer of grime over it and the tourist areas have what basically amounts to outdoor janitors attempting to keep it neat looking. Kind of an issue however in a city with an overall aversion to using trash cans. I used to live/work in the central area (Center City) and the grime/filth was far more ridiculous than anywhere else I've ever been. As a for instance, leaving my windows at home open resulted in noticeable soot buildup on the white window frame just one day after cleaning them. They'd get pretty close to black if left alone for a few weeks. A fun fact when you stop to consider you're breathing that in.

I'm surprised more people aren't even recognizing Minneapols and Honolulu. If you search for cleanest citiess in the world, they are usually the only American cities that make the top 10.

Luckily, air quality is measured in cities. Philadelphia, while not one of the cleanest, is certainly in better shape than many cities including the usual suspects LA, Pittsburgh, Phoenix, etc. Overall a ranking of 16th most polluted in air quality, really not bad for being the 5th largest city and having such an industrial past.

Most Polluted Cities: State of the Air 2012 - American Lung Association

Litter, on the other hand, is a big problem in Philly I agree, but it is mainly prevalant in blighted areas which is understandable.
