What would Philadelphia's city limits be if expanded to the size of Chicago in their periphary.
What would the size of the metro be if expanded to the size of Chicagoland?
And if this is close, with Chicago's 2010 census population loss, and Philly's gain, could Philly pass Chicago as the "largest, classically built" city anytime soon?
Philly is smaller. Not by as much as some might think on the city. Chicagoland is larger, Philly runs out of land to north and it becomes burbs of NYC
I think he means Philadelphia can't reach it's full potential because of the ridiculous laws of the state of PA like liquor laws and they ridiculous businesses taxes.

Stop withholding information. I know you have this information stored in a random excel file somewhere!
Another cool stat would be to see the cities at 200 sq miles. If you take out the "ohare" community area of Chicago it's sub 200sq miles. Ohare is 32 square miles and a whopping 390 people per square mile.

Would need to dig it up. At 200 connected miles Philly is about 2.1 million or so, could probably get closer to 2.2/3 if removed the PHL airport and added more of Chester county - would have to look - PHL is smaller than ORD (NE Philly airport may actually be larger than Midway in footprint actually and was also included), the port facility here takes up a larger footprint here (maybe if that is removed maybe a really selective 2.4 million but to me still pshing it and would need to verify)
Either way it would be smaller - will see if I can dig up the calculations, went to 300 sq miles but the next 100 sq miles starts adding a lot between 6-8K and would bring the average density down below 10K ppsm. On extending the metro Philly gets very exurban west of 202 into the rolling hills in Buck, Montco, and Chester counties. To the East it enters the Pine Barrens and developement just ends until the shore. Traveling NE it maintians good desnity but hits the grey area that is a combo of NYC and Philly burbs and becomes NYC metro areas (At the border Trenton is like 12-13K ppsm). Chicagoland is larger and built out more consistently with no other metro close by (No Milwaukee is further and less developed even if there is aspects that sort get grey to the North)
To me Chicago is larger, Philly is probably next and is closer to the inner Bay in continuous size though
On the topic at hand, nightlife I would give the edge to Chicago, though both are very good. On bar towns may even say a draw just think clubs and restaurants give the edge to Chicago based on my personal experience
Entertainment en masse the Philadelphia/Atlantic City region can stand with the best of them.
I believe Atlantic City and then Philadelphia are the #2 and #3 biggest gambling markets in the country behind Vegas. With these casinos comes headline musicians, shows and acts etc etc..
Even Without the casinos there are a hundred different live events(concerts, theater, opera etc ) going on every weekend just in the city. Im sure the same can be said for Chicago. But the gambling and ancillary events that come along with gaming probably puts the Philadelphia region in the upper echelon of entertainment.
Keep in mind Philadelphia has kind of become the defacto place to hold international super music events. Think Live Aid, Live 8, Made in America events. Its central location draws people from the entire east coast.
In reference to casinos (I was surprised that both Chicago and Philly rank so high)

exactly. and how about the incentive to help schools by extending last call to 3 am?
i knew it didn't stand a chance when it was proposed...
there are way too many roadblocks in this city to pass anything positive

Here's an aerial illustration of both airports on the same scale. It seems that NE is larger in land area while Midway has a larger passenger terminal. Oops! mispelled Philadelphia my typo.

Is that Philly's version of Buckingham Fountain? Looks pretty big
