I haven't seen Mud Island in person but in the pictures it is attractive. What is your critique of it?
Nashville missed it's chance when it put up the stadium with parking, acres and acres of parking on the East Bank. I understand after the flood that it wasn't wise to have buildings at that low elevation - but still it ruins the experience. I think a good waterfront needs to have activities on both sides - something attractive to look at on the opposite bank. Preferrably something human scaled - not a huge stadium.
Also it helps when there isn't a 4 lane highway between the city and the waterfront. I'm thinking Knoxville here but a lot of other cities have the same problem.
The only part of Mud Island I've been to was the park area at the southern tip. That was kind of neat but nothing spectacular, IMO. The northern portion looks interesting, but I've never been there. Although it has been several years since I was in Memphis so maybe it's changed a bit, but to me the whole waterfront just seemed sort of...desolate. I like Nashville's waterfront a little more, but it still doesn't do much for me. There are other sights I'd much rather see while there. But I've also learned that I just really don't care for very flat land, so that may be one reason I've never been particularly fond of Memphis in general, and why I tend to prefer the hillier parts of Nashville. And of course, Chattanooga definitely wins in the hills department.
Edit: I had completely forgotten about this (poorly stitched) panorama I took in Memphis a few years ago:
I'm partial to Philadelphia, with Boathouse Row and Kelly Drive along the Schuylkill River but Pittsburgh is probably #1.
Sadly, the other side of the river has the Sucksville Expressway. But I agree, boathouse row is very nice, and unexpected for a city the size of Philadelphia.
