Keeping in mind the OP combined the Bay Area, Los Angeles area, & the Greater Washington (which includes Baltimore)-- I'll be dropping that off myself (Baltimore). No point in keeping such a minor contributor online. In turn I'll be adding Providence to Boston. So by population (their weight size) it would look like this:

01. New York: 19,015,900
02. Los Angeles: 18,081,569
03. Chicago: 9,504,753
04. Boston: 7,601,061
05. Bay Area: 7,563,460
06. Dallas: 6,526,548
07. Houston: 6,086,538
08. Philadelphia: 5,992,414
09. Washington: 5,703,948
10. Miami: 5,670,125
11. Atlanta: 5,359,205
12. Detroit: 4,285,832
13. Phoenix: 4,263,236
14. Seattle: 3,500,026
15. Minneapolis: 3,318,486
16. San Diego: 3,140,069
17. Tampa: 2,824,724
18. Saint Louis: 2,817,355
19. Baltimore: 2,729,110
20. Denver: 2,599,504

Adjusting immigration to this population list (CSA's for Los Angeles, Boston, & Bay Area) & MSA's for everywhere else (I took Washington off the CSA-- Baltimore is not a power hitter & it's not apart of our area) it should look like this:

01. New York: 1,312,663
02. Los Angeles: 799,672
03. Miami: 569,665
04. Bay Area: 425,886
05. Washington: 302,485
06. Chicago: 287,091
07. Houston: 215,714
08. Boston: 214,005
09. Dallas: 194,810
10. Atlanta: 160,734
11. San Diego: 137,364
12. Philadelphia: 136,918
13. Seattle: 125,398
14. Phoenix: 96,332
15. Detroit: 92,137
16. Minneapolis: 89,297
17. Orlando: 88,699

Now assuming the OP got his numbers from here which is an incredibly reliable source for immigration (as reliable as it gets-- thanks to homeland security): Yearbook of Immigration Statistics | Homeland Security

I've color coded places as follows:
- Bold will be places that have remained stable for their population size
- Navy blue & bold for places that have moved down in correlation to their population size & immigration numbers
- Dark red for places that are in the top 10 for population but fall out of top 10 altogether for immigration
- Green for places that punch above their population size on immigration

Boston, Dallas, & Chicago all drop by 3 slots each from their population to their immigration numbers. I hardly think any of those three are in bad company, you'd be hard pressed to call any of them non-diverse/non-international/non-cosmopolitan in this context of immigration from the period of 2005-2011.

I don't think this analogy is the overall picture. For one Houston "pulls it's size" in immigration as it's the 7th largest by population and 7th largest as an immigration destination and while data shows Dallas lags a bit it's not necessarily because it's not pushing above it's size it's because of the places ahead of it pulling FAR ahead of their sizes (Miami & Washington).

Another thing, there are places that fared much worse than Chicago "for their sizes" but I'm curious why as to go after Chicago in particular?

If I had to organize it in tiers:

- New York is by itself
- Los Angeles is by itself
- Miami is by itself
- Bay Area is by itself
- Washington & Chicago are together
- Houston/Boston/Dallas are together
- Atlanta is by itself
- San Diego/Philadelphia/Seattle are together
- Phoenix/Detroit/Minneapolis/Orlando are together
Yep, I did the get the numbers from Homeland Security.

Also, I dont think were picking on Chicago per se, but the numbers do show that Chicago is on a downward trend for immigration from other countries. I also agree that Dallas hits below its weight given its size, but the numbers are on a big upward trend. Breaking it up further, DFW has been averaging about 28k per year and of that about 18-20k comes from the Dallas area (Dallas, Collin, and Denton counties). If the Dallas area were its own metro area of about 4 million, it would punch above its weight, but DFW combined punches below its weight.

As for the tiers above, I would agree except I would put Washington and the Bay Area together in a tier and would move Chicago, Houston, Dallas, and Boston to a tier.

No I mean PA Born, while to the naked eye it does appear that Chicago clocks in lower than it's weight but there are weaker examples than Chicago that he could have "exploited". If his intentions were to exploit anywhere.

I'm inclined to agree with the latter but the former is a bit of a haze. While Washington has 2 million less people than the Bay Area, the Bay Area is still a good 110,000 ahead. I think we do fine for our size, great even jumping from 9th largest in population to 5th largest as an immigrant destination.
