So, i'm curious, as I've spent some time in the Tenderloin of San Francisco. It's rough in the Tenderloin, but it's manageable if you know what you're doing, but it's still a rough ride.

in comparison to the Tenderloin, how are the bad parts of Tampa? St. Pete?

Are there any neighborhoods in the Tampa Bay Area that are as rough as the Tenderloin of San Francisco? Where are they?

There are rough areas in some of the older parts of Tampa like Robles Park, and Seminole Heights and Old West Tampa. Then there's some newer more polished Housing projects, and than there's some older brick projects.

those pictures that come up don't look anything near as bad as what the Tenderloin looks like. Not even close, especially that last one.

Apples and oranges. They're different kinds of neighborhoods and have different kinds of crime... The bad areas of Tampa won't have as much crime of opportunity as the TL that affects the average joe because there isn't nearly as much opportunity for it period; there aren't thousands of tourists pouring through any parts of Tampa everyday, let alone through the bad areas. Gang violence or targeted violence in general on the other hand could very easily be worse in the bad areas of Tampa than in the Tenderloin... the Tenderloin isn't really a "turf" or a "hood" so much as it is a skid-row. Every now and then there will be a shooting involving dealers or pimps in the TL but a lot of the violence originates from the addicts whether they're saving up for their next hit, getting back at dealers who ripped them off, getting back at other addicts who robbed them and/or stole their drugs, etc.

That's not to say that the more typical hood violence doesn't also occur in the Tenderloin... plenty of kids have been raised in it and claim it. Generally though there aren't major conflicts between groups of people in the TL... the danger comes from some of the desperate and crazed individuals roaming the streets, which I suspect is in part why you feel as though danger in the TL is manageable given that if you avoid certain intersections you avoid a lot of said individuals in the first place.

Agree it is apples to oranges.

The Tampa projects are more like Jordan Downs or other Watts / South Central projects, they are in less urban of an environment, less foot traffic, more like small individual apartments in a garden (or in the Tampa example, a large tower). Don't be fooled by the suburban appearance, those places are not very safe.

The Tenderloin is more like Skid Row in Los Angeles or maybe the LES in NYC's crime heyday, lots of SROs, junkies, homeless, a lot more foot traffic. More built up environment with run down buildings that give off a "ghetto" look.

Nineties has it right that the Tenderloin has more opportunistic crime, while in Tampa I bet you see more drive-bys, home invasions, shootings, etc.

Good analysis by both Nineties Flava and Munchitup. Pretty much. Tampa hoods are more hood in the traditional gangs, drugs, violence way. I've heard of the Tenderloin, and there's alot more homeless, and drug addicted, downtroden folks.
