As an overall percentage of metro residents who visit their downtown in a given month or year, it might be Los Angeles. DTLA is better-off than many downtowns, and has more things to do, but it's still not a "must-visit" zone for the whole metro area. There are a whole lot of people in the LA area who rarely if ever find themselves in DTLA, or at least never find themselves off of the freeways around DTLA.

Yes, Downtown San Jose has some amenities to offer-- many of which the OP listed it has.

Howeveer when you say "regional residents use it". Define regional? The people living near it then yeahh, the people living in the entirety of San Jose, then no. Nor the people in the San Jose/Santa Clara MSA or even the larger Bay Area CSA.
I have no way to know. I do know that the downtown isn't the province of a single ethnic group or income level, I see all kinds of people there. Probably not the Bay Area as a whole, the most important regional downtown is Downtown San Francisco, but that's 40 miles from San Jose.

The only time I can tell is something like the nativity display, when the exhibitors put signs on their work. It's not like there's some other center anywhere near there, Downtown Palo Alto and Mountain View are a good distance away and much smaller.

How about downtown Las Vegas? There's one or two casinos but not much else.

I will agree with above. downtown Vegas. No one really cares about it.

Also LA being such a huge city LA might be up there. It is not a bad downtown at all and it does have the staples center but being such a large spread out city and having so many other areas to go to LA might compete with this. I will say I got to LA 1-2 times a year and always stay in downtown and it improves every time I go.

LA because it has so many other 'downtowns'. Other examples would be Phoenix, Las Vegas, Houston, Cleveland, Detroit.etc.

I won't guess a percentage, but a large number of people have never been downtown and many others haven't been in years. But that's changing. So many people are starting to go there now. It's definitely become trendy.

Yeah, id definitely say downtown LA. More metro resident in LA have probably been to downtown Santa Monica more then DTLA.

A lot of Transplants and students in Phoenix have never been downtown PHX after living in the city 5 plus years

I agree, it's not big or impressive but there is a decent amount of things to do there. Having SJSU located right in the middle of downtown does a lot for its vibrancy and the amount of people in the area.

It does. One unique thing is that the university and the public library built a joint facility at the edge of the campus which was probably better than either of them could have built separately.

Yeah, nobody ever visits the arena for hockey or concerts, either. Hard to believe the OP thought up this brilliant thread and decided to start off with a wrong answer.
