Happy Black History Month...Well if the South won it would just be Febuary. Could you Imagine Alabama and South Carolina if The Confederacy won the US Civil War. Would they not be the Premier states of the Antebellum South Along with Virginia.

Remeber...there may not have been a Delta so Atlanta without its airport may not have taken off

Right smack in the Middle of the Confederate States would Be Birmingham and Hence no doubt would have possibly been a metro of millions, With professional sports and numerous Corporate Headquaters

And than theres Charleston, South Carolina was the first state to break off from the Union so no doubt it would've had a nostogic and sentimental value to the CSA and would've been seen as a leading example state. As such Im sure South Carolina may have equaled or have exceeded North Carolina in importance by now

Life for this two cities may have been radically different if there was a different result in 1865. The South would be far more dependant on these cities and as a result would have been much larger (Guestimate Birmingham city 750,000 metro 4.500.00 Charleston 450.000 metro 2.100.000)

Charleston Vs Birmingham if the South Won the Civil War

-Laws (Would there still be Jim Crow in the 21st century)
-Economy
-Shopping
-Which would be more Progressive
-Better Quality of life
-Population, Bigger or Smaller than today
-Sports (Would the South have its own NBA NFL MLB leagues)
-Scenary
-Demographics (Would they be more diverse and international if the South were an independant nation)
-Which would you prefer overall

Being that Birmingham was founded as an industrial center near the planned intersection of two rail lines after the Civil War, depending on how involved Northern investors were in related efforts, Birmingham might never have been founded or it might would have been much later. Charleston definitely had a head start, being one of the oldest, largest, and wealthiest cities in the South in the antebellum period, and had it not been devastated during the War, who knows how it might look today. But the 1886 earthquake did wreak havoc on the city.

No relevance to the thread, why are you so quick to put cities and states against each other?

Atlanta was booming before the war began due to the railroad. The war only accelerated it and the area's growing importance. It was not made when the airport and air travel took off.

My vote is Atlanta.

I wouldn't say that Atlanta was "booming" before the war, as it only had less than 10,000 residents in 1860--at least compared to the larger Southern cities. However, the railroad was certainly the first impetus for growth and the first real boom began after the war when the city began to rapidly industrialize, not so much due to the war itself, but due to local leaders who pushed for it (e.g., Henry Grady). The airport is almost singularly responsible for kicking Atlanta's growth into a much higher gear. It began to take off (pun intended) during the 1940's; prior to this period, Atlanta and Birmingham were about the same size.

Why would it be Birmingham.... If it is Alabama we are talking about, Montgomery would be the capital if they chose to locate it there as it was the first confederate capital during the civil war anyhow, doh.
After that, it would be Richmond... but it is so close to DC that...
if the south did win... they would probably find it strategic to keep the capital in DC, after all, they donate the land to the north to begin with, and would have defeated the north, so why not run operations from there? Once the war started, it was about more than just secession, they would have also taken over the north's land most likely and rewritten the government.

what a weird thread...doesn't anybody know basic american history?
