It seems that the "South Side" of many cities doesn't get the same love as the more core areas of those cities.

Of the cities listed above, which city has the best "South" side in your opinion? Discuss things like crime, transit, amenities, walkability, diversity, etc.

Which southside would you rather live in?

*I've excluded South Philly since our "South Side" is considerably nicer than our North.

I voted Boston thinking of the South End and Southie but I think maybe you are referring more to Dorchester / Roxbury / Mattapan, since South Boston and S.E. are actually pretty nice.

If that is the case I might have to think it over more...

I'll just talk about South LA since I am most familiar with it.

It has a couple of walkable areas, mostly around USC and Leimert Park. Other than that is pretty much a wasteland for walkability, though a lot of that has to do with the fact that it is very amenities-poor. I would imagine that the amount of car-free and transit-dependent people are higher than the LA average despite poor walking conditions (probably a similar trait for all these cities).

Transit you have the Blue Line, Green Line, Expo Line and the Silver Line BRT (sorta). The Crenshaw Line is in the very early stages of development. Overall the area has not really been neglected in terms of lines that run through it, though I have heard reports of the Blue Line being very old and shoddy in places.

Amenities - very poor. Lots of fast-food, pawn shops and liquor stores. What you would call a grocery-desert.

Diversity is okay but not great, mostly new immigrants from Central America and Mexico plus the remaining (and fading) black population.

Crime is not great either though LA has seen across-the-board reductions in crime. I believe east of the 110 is worse than the western half of South LA. There are some upscale neighborhoods like Baldwin Hills, Ladera Heights, etc.

South Boston has become a media darling over the past decade or so, and gets far more love than the neighborhoods to the north.

They say Ladera Heights, Baldwin Hills, View Hills and Leimert Park are like Black Beverly Hills.

Southside of Chicago is a complete mixed bag. Great parts, middle class parts and terrible parts. Of course it's only the terrible parts that really get the attention....

I don't know enough about the others....

South Boston is not negro friendly so no. Southside Chicago is like Vietnam so no too.
South SF...no. SE DC... Im from the projects but people in SE DC are ignorant and ghetto.
So LA gets my vote.

South LA is an ever-changing place. 60 years ago, it was overwhelmingly white and a quite popular destination for homeowners. Today, it is home to many immigrant families. In 60 more years? Once all the immigrant homeowners pass on the property to US-born children who have been pretty much "Americanized", I believe that this area will reemerge as a perfectly reasonable place to live once again.
