Toronto is still quite a bit smaller than Chicago.

Yes, the city proper now has a larger population, but that's because Toronto annexed half its suburbs a few years ago. Toronto is still smaller.

No Toronto is not larger than Chicago. Not even close.
Metro area Chicago is a decent amount bigger and you're correct...the GDP of Chicago MSA is almost exactly double that of Toronto's metro area (I think $525 billion vs. $260 billion). While there are a lot of big companies (i.e. Boeing, United Continental Airlines) HQ'd in Chicago, there's a lot more in the suburbs like Walgreens, Sears, Kraft, McDonald's, etc (and some are moving back to the city) and a lot of big time presence too (i.e. every major car company, Banks, industrial products, etc).

It will be awhile before Toronto overtakes Chicago in economic prowess, if ever, but maybe someday... who knows!

Maybe...............but that wasn't the point of the thread.

But, there is a point. Population means something, but you can also relate it to say GDP per Capita. I love population numbers as much as the next guy, but there's other supporting facts out there to ask "Does it matter without other facts?"

No, really, there's not. I know running around in circles about this type of thing is popular among people looking for something to do; but its a pointless exercise. OP posted a list of city populations, that is all it is. You can discredit it, attack it, mental masturbate all over it, doesn't matter.

You can mentally masturbate all you want over population numbers too. "oooo Shanghai has more people than Istanbul." Who cares? There's more to a city than how many people live there.

Toronto is like a bloated concentration camp of wealthy immigrants desperate to get a foothold into the first world and Canadians in desperate search of a bit of big city life.......both of these are man-made situations, entirely dependent on keeping Canadians caged north of the border.

Chicago is a totally organic 10,000,000 plus beast.....

Just because a modern day urban concentration camp (Toronto) bulges with people, doesn't mean its doing anything better than a place like Chicago.

Lagos has twice London's population.....I suppose we are to assume Lagos is doing better than London?
