So far there are 4 Southern cities who are in Beta and Gamma status

Atlanta(Transportation)
Dallas(Transportation)
Miami(Entertainment/Finance)
Houston(Energy)

So which of these Southern cities have the best potential of being a Alpha world city?

Miami, Dallas and Atlanta are now Alpha- on that city scale. It's pretty arbitrary though. I like FP magazines ranking more.
Global city - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Which could become Alpha without the minus? I think Miami has the most potential, Atlanta has a lot going for it too and Dallas is a big business hub. All three are in the same class just depends whether they care more about international connectivity and international business just business by the numbers. I see all making the jump around the same time.

Each one of the cities is a very large transportation hub and Dallas and Atlanta have more than just transit.

3 of the are already in the Alpha category. Houston is the only one still left in the Beta category.

GaWC is a pretty hillbilly source. I believe P.J. Taylor who wrote it confessed to it only being a ranking measuring which cities have most business connectivity to London and nothing else.

Point is moot. Look at Citi Group or Foreign Policy for more credible rankings than GaWC can ever dream to be.

I dont know you can really answer the question like that. Its almost as if only one can be an alpha city. They are all set on their own course toward it and it doesnt matter if any of the others get there first.

I mostly agree with this. The US is great in that there are some many and even diversified cities/economies

We all as Americans benefit from this more than being penalized

Houston and DFW are already separating themselves away from both Atlanta and Miami if you look at economic data and population growth.

But international recognition, entertainment, media, and finance, ATL and Miami cover their imperfections in those sectors.
