Chicago doesn't have quite as much competition within its region as L.A. That's not to say that cities like Detroit, Indianapolis, and St. Louis aren't heavy-hitters, but L.A. has San Francisco, San Diego, Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Seattle...that's a pretty stellar lineup and does take some focus off of L.A.
It's a short flight, and not that long of a drive.
Not that long of a drive? It is a 12 hour drive if you don't stop almost ever. The flight is over 2 hours. Sorry, but not only is it not that close to NYC, it's not even in the same region of the country. New York does not feel Chicago's influence (except for some business) and visa versa (markets yes..and some business).
Nobody in their right minds would consider NYC very close to Chicago geographically within the country. It's not like it's a 4 hour drive.
I voted LA. Chicago is close to other big cities, like NYC, that are of equal, or more, importance. San Diego and San Francisco are important too, but mostly for tourism.
Id never say Chicago is close to NYC, but it is close to Detroit, Milwaukee, Minn/StPaul, StLouis etc.
SD for tourism and lifestyle yes, but SF is a tourist city but is also the tech hub of the universe.
LOL@ San Francisco mainly only important for tourism. San Francisco is a pretty big financial hub and it's freaking Silicon Valley and the high tech hub of the world. San Francisco also has more Fortune 500 companies based in it than Los Angeles...by 10. Are you kidding me dude?
Chicago definitely. It's the only city that stands out in its region. It's not particularly cosmopolitan or multicultural though considering how heavy-hitting it really is. It is truly Midwestern at heart. Houston, TX is quite alot more racially mixed than Chicago, for instance.
Los Angeles is the main city on the West Coast but there is San Francisco and Seattle, both in very different regions altogether that have stronger presence than Chicago's "competitors".

San Francisco is important only for tourism? The largest finance center on the West Coast and Silicon Valley are pretty important, for starters.

Really? Chicago is not multicultural? Not sure if serious..
