Both have their areas that are safe. Both have their areas where it isn't very safe. It's hard to compare the two because of the size difference for me -- hard data aside.

Chicago is much safer, at least most of Chicago is safe, unlike memphis where most of it isn't safe.

It's hard to compare both cities because Chicago is a good deal bigger, but there are areas of Chicago that are larger in population than Memphis combined which are safer, sure...and there are areas probably the opposite of safety vs. memphis too.

Chicago is most likely safer although I am not sure by how much.

This is the latest list by the FBI (made using 2011 data):
Most dangerous U.S. cities - Detroit (1) - CNNMoney

Memphis was #9. Chicago didn't make the top 10 list.

I was shocked too see Kansas City at #10. I hadn't heard things were getting that bad there. Are gangs from St. Louis moving westward or something or is it developing it's own? It's sad it's one of the top spots in my list of cities to move in the future and this is not good news.

I also didn't think Oakland was this high up. I knew things were getting pretty bad there but I didn't think it was #3.

Edit:
Alright I just realized that list includes burglary and car theft as well which are property crimes. This would be a better list for violent crimes:

Still pretty similar but Memphis doesn't make the top 10 in this list.

What is with these threads?

How can anyone generalize about the safety of any city of a half a million.

Zip codes? sure, but not whole large cities.

Right? These types of threads are pretty worthless. Most cities labeled bad for crime have certain areas that are bad.

They both have some deplorable ghettos, Chicago especially. But Chicago has lots of nice upper class and middle/working class neighborhoods, and I don't know if I've ever heard of anything like that in Memphis. So I'd say Chicago is safer. Both cities need to get a grip on their crime problems though as both get way too much attention for their crime!

I've lived in both and I will say neither one.

Most cities are only dangerous for people involved in drugs, gangs and dealing with people who are involved.

I don't really think of it as this city is safer than the other because personal lifestyle choices play such a big role in safety.
