I have to imagine it's winters are incredibly miserable though.
It depends on what you are used to, but I'll put it into perspective. There's tons of people from all over the world living here, and the weather isn't miserable enough for many of them to move. It can get cold and be a little windy, and you have the "you never know" factor, but it's not as bad as people make it out to be. This winter is a lot worse and volatile than normal, but usually the temperature is right below freezing during the day. Boston gets more snow than Chicago for the record.
I've lived in and been all around the midwest. Out of Iowa, Minnesota, the Dakotas, and Wisconsin...Chicago actually has it the best during winter. The only times you hear about Chicago winters is when something major happens like a huge snow storm, or really cold weather. When it was super cold the other week, one of the days basically set a new record for the lowest high temperature EVER recorded in the history of the city. It gets below 0 maybe twice a year in Chicago and some years it won't even do that. The average high January temperature at O'Hare since 1980 is 31.5 degrees. The only thing is that in the midwest the weather is volatile. Meaning that it could be average for 3 days, then it could be highs of 21 degrees for 3 days, then it'll go back to normal for 3 days, then go down to like 19 degrees for 2 days. However, this is no different from anywhere else in the midwest. You'll see this in the summer too, except not with temperatures. You'll see it with storms. Chicago isn't as bad as other places with it, but in some areas of the midwest it's normal for it to be sunny at 11am and by 5pm having a severe storm. Luckily the temperature doesn't usually fluctuate a ton during the summer and is in the 80s and 90s.
I mean, I've heard Chicago in the summer is amazing, but winters are pretty bad. I'm all for snow, but not super super cold...I can manage NYC's climate, but Chicago is just too cold...I was looking at the 10 day forecast on weather.com and oh my.

I love Chicago, but I don't know who told you the Summer there is amazing. It gets pretty freaking sweltering! Not by N.O. standards of course, but still...pretty hot.

31.5 degrees average is not "super cold." Chicago usually doesn't even get a ton of snow, again. Boston gets more, and most of the snow that happens in Chicago are in little spurts. Any snowfall over 3 or 4 inches in the city is not 100% normal, though it can happen.
This winter has been weird and more brutal than normal for sure. Anybody who debates that is a ****ing idiot. However, take notice - "not normal." It's cold, but not as cold as you think when things are more normal.

It can get pretty hot, but the summers are amazing because there's so much **** to do everyday.

There will most likely be a heat wave or two but it doesn't stay hot in Chicago. You can have days if not a couple weeks with temps not getting above 80. I remember a few 78s and 77s for highs in the middle of July.
