Sorry...it is probably the least run down city in America. Basically built in the last 25 years with broad and expansive Avenues and Boulevards. And a freeway system that actually works.

The level of misinformation on City vs City is incredible. You folks must live in dark rooms with no access to true information.

Are you kidding me.... Have you seen the neighborhoods. Obviously I understand the strip is an amazing spectacle since I asked the OP if they had ever traveled off of it. However, go 2 miles off the strip and you see nothing but vacant buildings and some of the ugliest neighborhoods ever. It may be a newer city but it is extremely fake and run down.

I listed examples, but I don't think you're familiar with the type of music she's talking about. True, most acts come through Vegas once in a while or as a novelty, but I'm pretty attuned to the music scene, and the cities mentioned are actually filled with twentysomething audiences that actually live there. If there are bohemian, twentysomething neighborhoods in Vegas, I've never heard of them. For jam bands, I'd take Denver, hands down. For more indie/rock stuff, I'd take Seattle and Austin. Fremont Street or Red Rocks, you tell me where the fans would rather go and the musicians would rather play. There's no comparison between cover bands in a circus atmosphere and good venues/good bands. Sorry.

Does Vegas get tons of shows? Absolutely, and there's no contesting the fact that the town is the adult entertainment capital of the country. But visiting is different than living, and sheer quantity doesn't mean that it's all good, or that it would fit the OP's taste. Carrot Top, Cirque de Soleil, and Barry Manilow may not be all that appealing to a girl in her 20's.

And some of us have actually eaten at restaurants before, so dining in casinos or buffets isn't all that impressive. There are some hip places, but outside the strip the area offers a mediocre, predominantly chain offering compared to other cities its size.

Fun to visit, but perhaps lacking enough substance to live, especially in your 20's. But I agree with DevanXL's take. Enjoy yourself, take a big road trip, and check them all out.
You simply betray a lack of knowledge. There is a large and active local indie scene. Not my cup of tea but doing very well. And then there is a vast amount of all music styles permanently in town or moving through it on a daily basis. I am well aware of the power of the strip and its epic events...but those are simply desert for the locals. There are I believe more paid musicians per capita than anywhere else in the US. And if you know you way around the local scene you can find huge local opportunities after the Strip shows are over.

Yes Austin has a hold on certain music festivals...but those are not for locals either. And they only represent a tiny portion of the music scene overall.

That is because our poorest neighborhoods cluster near the strip. You go off strip five miles to the edge of where the middle folk live. Than you continue for another 6 or 7 miles to where the well off live.

Again the lack of knowledge of even the basic geography of Las Vegas indicates the utter lack of any real information in the heads of those who participate in this weird list. If you wish to have an opinion about it learn a little first. And you are not an expert because you have been on the strip twice and once actual drove on Koval.

It is my cup of tea, and for a twenties indie/jam band scene, i.e. the OP's demographic and taste, Vegas lacks. I'm talking day in/day out, not just festivals. But maybe she'll start getting into Guns N Roses cover bands and start listening to Neil Diamond if she moves out. Then, she'll be in paradise. Or Paradise, NV to be more exact.

Yes, the geography of LV is non-traditional, the nicer stuff tends to be in the exurbs. A good buddy of mine lives in Summerlin, loves it there and plays a lot of golf. But he agrees that there's not enough history to have nice old neighborhoods, and there's no area really geared towards twentysomethings. But indulge us all, where are the hip spots?

And you play the standard game. You have no idea what the scene is in Las Vegas so you reach to Guns and Roses. You know it is a flat out lie but you do it because you have no other retort. A lack of knowledge is not an opinion.

And I am talking day in and day out. Where do you think all those lovey young people who work on the strip eat and drink and entertain themselves? You think they can afford $500 bottle service. You think all those musicians are stored away each night and turned back on the next morning?

Yes, I'm generalizing a bit. Bret Michaels does help to round out the scene. I keed. Vegas has a little bit of everything after all- even the Eiffel Tower! I'm sure it has a little bit of a scene somewhere, even if it's 100% service industry people. Really I just think there are better places to be for a girl in her mid-20's- especially one into music, and I think most people would agree. But it's really up to her to decide that.

And you are welcome to your opinion but for many girls in their 20s into the bar and Spa thing it is Paradise.

Nuclear Physicists and Biologists can certainly find a better location. But for this lady she wil likely make more money, pay less to live and have a very enjoyable experience. And she will find all the indie music she can possible stand...

<jaws drop> whoa that is a huge jam scene!
I don't know why there are some CO transplants in NC...they are leaving too much goodness behind!! (Perhaps they're not into the scene...hehe)

To be honest I think you may be a little too "Vegas Dreaming" at the moment. Its has flash and flare and entertainment that I think you are want, but lacks the substance that you may be leaving behind in NC. Try adding a few more cities to your list. Denver, Austin, Seattle, and San Diego can all serve you well and are better communities then Vegas.

Austin is a college town and Live music capital so it has plenty of Clubs and Bars that you would be look to visit or work at. Growing city, very nice place to live.

Denver has a strong bar scene with beautiful mountains and attractions near by. Good diverse population aswell and if you were to change career fields has lots of "Non-entertainment" fields you could venture in.

Seattle has a strong bar culture and growing club scene (SLS hotel and Club will soon be in Seattle with other locations New York, Miami, and Beverly Hills) aswell as laid back attitude and Surrounded by ocean, Mountains and much Naturally beauty. Same as Denver offers many non entertainment careers if your interests should change.

San Diego has a strong Nightlife scene and also has packed with spas and resorts you potentially work at. Beautiful oceans and and relatively urban community.

San Diego would be the most expensive, Not far behind would be Seattle, Denver would be third and Austin would be the least expensive.

Seattle and Austin have great Indie Rock music scenes aswell.

Portland has alot to offer as-well (kind of like Seattle excepted smaller) and would probably be a smoothest transition of all the cities I listed. I recommend travel to these (or just a few) cities for a few days if thats possible. If you visit Portland then Seattle should be easy to swing by and you could easily make a stop at Austin or Denver before heading to Vegas. San Diego would be more out of the way of all the cities though.

I appreciate more cities/music alternatives!!! I like that Portland is more affordable and it doesn't hurt that Seattle is nearby. I'd also have my hippie friend in Portland.
I'm going to see Umphrey's McGee and STS9 in Aug here in NC. I actually looked it up and they do pass through Las Vegas.
I don't know, I am leaning towards Vegas right now, maybe it's something to get out my system, and it seems more easier. I hope it's worth the sacrifice of not only the big names in the music scene, but also the local music I have yet to discover...

Yes that is why I am Vegas dreaming...lol The affordability and spa jobs in Vegas is very attractive to me. Perhaps there will be other things in Vegas that will fill that (music) void...

Most people are very young in the nightlife here in NC (ages 18-23); people my age (mid 20s) get married and have children. That is another reason I want to venture out to Vegas or Portland.

I will keep everyone updated.

Sounds good! Just make sure you do thorough research on all these cities! Visit if you can and make sure you pick the best city for your FUTURE. Don't want to be in a place and feel like moving away after a year!
