Didn't even know Atlanta had a unique Ferris wheel.
Ferris wheels are just too connected with theme parks or fairs for them to be considered an iconic destination. Heck, in Southern California, practically every city had a Ferris wheel somewhere.
As for the Gateway Arch, I feel it's the more impressive city icon, but Seattle is the much more famous city, so most Americans know the Space Needle, but many might not even know the Arch is in St Louis. St Louis has half of Seattle's population and is just a medium sized city, so it's fame is limited.
Yeah I don't get whats so special about ferris wheels. London does it so every city has to copy them?
Texas has several large ferris wheels. Its not something we brag about though.
London Eye is a pretty iconic ferris wheel to be honest...
Well, the London Eye is in London which already has a very high degree of visibility and on top of that, their ferris wheel is massive (400+ feet) and has a very striking design unlike that of most ferris wheels. I don't feel Atlanta's ferris wheel really competes so well as there are many more ferris wheels similar to it in both size and design.

No one in Atlanta is trying to pretend like this Ferris wheel is somehow iconic. The Negative Nancys in here, however, are trying to pretend like we are so that they have another reason to slam us.
If anything the Space Needle is slightly less well known than the the Arch. ..
I certainly wouldn't bet on that.
