Ferris wheels are just too connected with theme parks or fairs for them to be considered an iconic destination. Heck, in Southern California, practically every city had a Ferris wheel somewhere.

As for the Gateway Arch, I feel it's the more impressive city icon, but Seattle is the much more famous city, so most Americans know the Space Needle, but many might not even know the Arch is in St Louis. St Louis has half of Seattle's population and is just a medium sized city, so it's fame is limited.
Yeah I don't get whats so special about ferris wheels. London does it so every city has to copy them?

Texas has several large ferris wheels. Its not something we brag about though.

I'm sorry, but Atlanta's Ferris Wheel is hardly a U.S. landmark.

BTW, it's hard to beat the Arch.

Well, the London Eye is in London which already has a very high degree of visibility and on top of that, their ferris wheel is massive (400+ feet) and has a very striking design unlike that of most ferris wheels. I don't feel Atlanta's ferris wheel really competes so well as there are many more ferris wheels similar to it in both size and design.

Not for long. They are going to build a 625ft Ferris Wheel in New York City. It will be the largest in the world, bigger than the Singapore Flyer.

It was disappointing when I visited the Arch because it was overcast and it made the Arch look white. Wish the weather was better when I was there

No one in Atlanta is trying to pretend like this Ferris wheel is somehow iconic. The Negative Nancys in here, however, are trying to pretend like we are so that they have another reason to slam us.

This thread is kind of dumb. It's like asking who is the greatest US president: George Washington vs. Abraham Lincoln vs. Gerald Ford.

One thing is certain. The view from the Space Needle is unmatched. Catch an Olympic Mountain sunset from there and you will never be the same.

The Space Needle was first. The CN tower was a copycat.
