Flagstaff, Arizona - a slice of Colorado with alpine peaks and ponderosa forest high above the Arizona desert set in an extraordinary location. Flagstaff has access to an impressive array options to some of the best outdoor recreation this country has to offer as the gateway to the Grand Canyon, nearby Sedona, and Southern Utah National Parks. It has a small but charming downtown and fairly well kept homes in most of the city. If isolation sets in Phoenix is only a 2 hour drive away.

The old cities of the northeast and midwest are good answers.

Palm Desert, California if you are able to escape to San Diego during the summer.

Grand Junction, CO is quite an interesting town due to it's location. It's on the Colorado River, views of the largest Mesa in the world, in Colorado wine country, and has desert landscape. The Downtown is pretty nice and the airpot gets commercial flights.

Come on you guys, Asheville MSA is like 400k, and Greenville MSA is getting close to a million. We should know by now that when an OP lists size parameters and doesn't specifically ask for city limit population, the standard is to use MSA figures.

To answer your actual question, OP; i.e. cities similar in size and amenities to La Crosse...

Iowa City, IA (MSA 152k) (and it has Chipotle AND Panchero's!)
Ithaca, NY (MSA 101k)
Lawrence, KS (MSA 112k)

Lots of great options in New England as well - only problem is they blur the line between "small city" and "bustling suburb" thanks to New York's and Boston's urban sprawl.

I guess it's a conservative town, compared to more liberal towns, sure.
