Here's jd433's list with my changes highlighted in bold and some comments.

1) New York (I don't think anyone can really dispute this)

2) Chicago (I tend to think of it as more cosmopolitan than Los Angeles, but the competition is very close)

3) Los Angeles (Sorry to move it down a notch)

4) San Francisco (Definitely comes after the first three)

5) Washington DC (Definitely comes after the first four because it is the capital of the nation)

6) Boston (Perhaps my own personal bias came into this, but I really think that Boston deserves a place over Houston)

7) Houston (Sorry to all Houston residents in advance)

8) Philadelphia (This city seems to take precedence for me over the lower ones)

9) Atlanta (Tough contest between Atlanta, Miami, and Seattle; I think they are all about equal)

10) Miami

11) Seattle

12) San Diego

13) Saint Louis (Seems more important to me than all the ones following it)

14) Dallas (Sorry to move Dallas so far)

15) Phoenix

16) Minneapolis

17) Denver

18) San Antonio

19) Austin

20) Detroit (This could dramatically change for Detroit if it got its act together in the future)

Oh, trust me - the trend has already migrated! Well, to Atlanta anyway.

Our two Downtowns may have the largest amount of homeless that I have ever witnessed in American cities. At least yours aren't as in-your-face and aggressive as ours!

The San Francisco "twist" seems to include pets though, that is very strange.

Cool list, although I would put Pittsburgh and Cleveland on the list and get rid of Phoenix and Austin

We really need to do something about the homeless here. I mean its beyond out of control. Free Deodarant would be a good first step.

most accurate list thus far--- at least as far as accuracy can be gauged on such a topic.

At least they know where the good weather is.
Every couple of winters we find a trampsicle on some park bench in the Boston.

Here's an interesting study that largely focuses on economic trends.

http://www.brookings.edu/metro/pubs/...orldcities.pdf

According to them, they would say:

1) New York City
2) Chicago
3) Los Angeles
4) San Francisco
5) Miami
6) Atlanta
7) Washington DC
8) Boston
9) Dallas
10) Houston
11) Seattle
12) Denver
13) Philadelphia
14) Minneapolis
15) St. Louis
16) Detroit
17) San Diego
18) Portland
19) Charlotte
20) Cleveland
21) Indianapolis
22) Kansas City
23) Pittsburgh

All other cities, so they say, are not economically connected enough to be a "world city".
