Think it would be interesting to discuss the 7 most diverse cities (cities = metros btw) in the US. Don't forget to include Puerto Rico and Hawaii in your thoughts.

For criteria I guess racially, ethnically, diplomatic missions, foreign flag carriers, languages, food, etc.

Only 7.

New York, Oakland, Jersey City, and Los Angeles immediately come to mind.

I think Miami is the only major city in the world that has more than 50% of it's population as "foreign born" where FB includes US citizens born in another country, foreign nationals, and illegals.

But Miami has it's population mostly from Spanish speaking America. While there is considerable diversity among those countries, Miami is probably much less diverse than New York City or Toronto. New York has roughly 36% foreign born.

The term needs to be defined carefully.

City Data List by percentage foreign born. Although populations are not provided, Miami at 400K people is by far the largest city on the list. Santa Ana has a population of 329K so it is a good candidate for the top 7.

I believe Toronto is also over 50% foreign-born, but that's for a different thread.

thnx for digging up the stats.

Yea even as a metro, Miami is at the top. The 20% + metros are the ones that my eyes are on, huge population IMO.

As in racial diversity? Meaning a widespread mix of whites, blacks, Hispanics, Asians etc...

NYC, Oakland, Los Angeles, Jersey City, Houston, San Francisco (less on the blacks but still a presence)...maybe San Jose or Northern VA suburbs?

(Miami counts for foreign-born but it's not exactly RACIALLY mixed- just seems Hispanic to me)

Yea I mean diversity in full context. Both racially and ethnically and its also ok to use metros as a substitute for cities at large, most folks living in suburbs commute to their city during the day as it is IMO.

My list after some thought would be LA, SF Bay Area, NYC, DC, Houston, Miami, and I think Dallas in any order for metros. Wanted to put Chicago in there but its arguments are mostly off raw #s and not %s IMO. I guess Dallas and Chicago can fight it out for #7 IMO.

It feels awkward putting Miami or in this case leaving it off which is good for Latinos and some Euros in there when it has almost a nonexistent African (from Africa) pop or Asian pop and even the other half of the Euros.

Dallas and Chicago are about the same- city proper and metro even (they both have their share of white suburbs and more ethnic suburbs). Dallas has a stronger Hispanic presence, and of course Chicago substantially more with Blacks. (Houston is far ahead in this regard of multiculturalism- even Atlanta's suburban Gwinnett County is more diverse than Chicago). So no, Chicago is truly Midwestern breadbasket type in the "cosmopolitan" department

Miami has a real diversity of Latin/ South American groups but you stick out like a sore thumb if you're not Hispanic so no, I don't consider it truly racially-diverse. Me as an Asian-American couldn't wait to get out of Florida! No place in the country made me feel so out-of-place (and I've traveled a lot)!
