My fiance and I are moving to the PNW and primarilly due to the economy think Seattle might be the better place for us. She works as a managing editor for a large medical publishing firm currently, and I am a microbiologist / chemist. Thus far it seems like Seattle provides more job options for us. We both very much like both cities, but I especially liked the smaller town feel of of the Portlands' neighborhoods. We would like to be near lots of restraunts, small independent shops, not too far from places to hike or be outside, and be relatively affordable, etc. We'd like to avoid being in the heart of the city living in a cramped apartment, but also dont want to live in a suburb that would be a long commute to the city, that has little to offer outside of stripmalls and fast food. Can anyone recomend any areas in Seattle like that?

Ballard is an amazing neighborhood, probably my favorite neighborhood in Seattle and feels like the best parts of Portland.
