Yeah, a "reality" show, especially one called the "Real" Housewives of (insert city, state, or town) is a really good example to give us.
Look, you guys are all entitled to your opinions. But, while this poll certainly doesn't even mean anything except some people on a message boards' opinions, LA is winning and it seems that Miami would come second or even possibly win if it were listed. I think those 2 cities have more a reputation of being materialistic and judgmental on it than any other city. I think everywhere in America is materialistic, we are a capitalist nation that is our way of life, but I definitely think some people in some cities tend to show it off more than others and that wealth tends to much more in your face. Maybe it's based on stereotypes, and maybe NYC is most materialistic to you, but not to me and this really should be the end of this discussion. We're going in circles here.
I was raised around women like that in Upstate NY. I see it everywhere in NYC and NJ. The entire tri-state area.
Italian American women are especially guilty of it. Gucci, Prada, etc. spending more time in the tanning bed than the one in their bedroom. Talk about Valley Girls. We have our own versions right on this coast.
The show creates drama. It is meant to. However, the personalities and materialism present in "cast members" is very real.

You're stereotyping. Not every Italian-American carries/wears Italian brands and we (yes, we, I am half Italian) certainly don't all go tanning. It's awful for your skin, I would never do that to myself.
I understand what you're saying, yes those people exist, but it is NOT the norm. Reality shows are also not the norm.
Example outside of NY/NJ, I have a friend from Orange County, CA. They live on the Eastern side, more towards the mountains and about 40 minutes from the coast. One of the Real Housewives of Orange County lives near my friend, only a few blocks away. My friend and her friends are nothing like these 'Real Housewives' and she's told me how BS it is overall. Are people like that, in OC? Sure. Is it normal? Not really, especially not for her specific area.
I think that are far as reputations go, there are cities with a stronger materialistic/judging you vibe than NYC.

Can't believe you don't have the Washington D.C. area on your list.
