Oakland Sound in particular.
Maybe I skipped over it, but who here can deny Tower of Power and the hottest horn section in all of R&B?

What other song can you shut the club down to?

TSOP was to the 1970s what Motown was to the 1960s, and no other cities in the US produced an R&B style that so defined a decade. Memphis, however, was the runner-up in both decades, which is what gives it iconic status along with Detroit and Philadelphia.

But the interesting thing about Philly is that there were Philly sounds both before and after TSOP - this city has a long and constantly evolving R&B scene. Hall and Oates, the kings of blue-eyed soul, are a Philadelphia sound unto themselves.

And let's not forget the most soulful album and song David Bowie ever produced - "Young Americans," recorded here at Sigma Sound Studios.

Still too male oriented. Shame on you. You forget about Patti LaBelle( who, along with her friends, Sarah Dash,
Nona Hendrix, and Cindy Birdsong) created Patti LaBelle and the Bluebells 50 + years ago during the girl group era. They then re-imagined themselves, after Birdsong left for the Supremes, as simply, LaBelle during the 70s.

Hall and Oates barely lived in the Phila. area, once they became successful, while Patti LaBelle and Kenny Gamble still do.
