Right here! Me! Even if that music is before my time, I realize one of the reasons why I idolize California and moved here. I think the hippy-dippy, folk-influenced pychedelic rock as the most timeless music ever.

One of the more recent songs I've learned to play on the guitar include Creeque Alley by the Mammas and Pappas, and Dinos Song by Quicksilver Messenger service.

Downey is globally known for "the Apollo space program and the Carpenter". Now I've heard it all.

I guess Romeo, MI is globally known for "the GM test lab and Kid Rock". Your random dude in Bostwana is obviously well versed in obscure American acts and the location of random science research facilities.

Bed Stuy isn't famous like Times Square or Venice or something, but it is very well known world-wide, especially among anyone with university education, has traveled a bit, and under 40. Obviously it won't be well-known among people who aren't worldly, but they won't know much about anywhere.

Agreed. I feel the same way.

I'm actually taking a tour of Paramount studios this weekend.

Good point on both.

That burger culture; McDonalds, Jack In The Box, Bobs Big Boy, Carls Jr, In-N-Out Burger
Mexican food pushed into fast food culture; Taco Bell, Del Taco etc...

In music, James Hetfield and Dave Alvin are also from Downey.

I think an interesting twist on this subject would be: which metro area has more locales with significant contributions to the global consciousness?

Whether it's quantity or quality of contribution, it's certainly a more worthwhile discussion than one limited to individual perceptions of whether OTHER people consider a certain place "famous". And its probably why this thread has gravitated in that direction.

You sound like Trimac but he lives in Perth not Melbourne?

Yes, the hallmark of a classical education is knowing where Bed Stuy is...

While that's obviously nothing close to what I wrote, you're actually not that far off.

Part of being worldly and educated is knowing about other places that have outsized prominence/influence in the world. NYC would be one of those places, and Bed Stuy would one of the more prominent NYC neighborhoods.

What's so special about Bed-Stuy? I'd think it'd better known among hip hop listeners than well-educated.
