Have you ever been to either of those places? They both have the feel of a small town within a big city. Of course they are not ACTUALLY small towns. But as large cities go, you get an easy-going, laid-back feel in SF and SD that is certainly not matched in NY, WASH, or Chicago.

yea, infact ive lived in both places. I can see san fran from my house.Just because sf anD san diego dont have the same "feel" that those eastern establishment cities have does not make them have a small town feel. Infact I dont think there is one city in california that really resembles the east (of the mississippi) what so ever.

Again how you can think a city that is the second most dense city in the nation (sf)can have a small town feel is beyond me. Does russian hill, mission, hunters point, or north beach have a small town feel? Are you insane? The same goes with san diego which has over a million people. I can agree that san diego not feel the same as a larger city but to say it has a small town feel is well, silly.

Default keep debating!

Hi All,

I'm so glad I found this debate. I currently live in Boston and I'm thinking about moving. I'm trying to choose between SF and NYC. I LOVE NYC, but my family is in L.A. (don't want to live there). I'm over Boston; it's been 10 good years, but I'm done. So, where to next... I havent' been to SF in 12 years; I imagine it has changed a lot.

Anyway, I'm glad to find this thread and hear all the pros and cons. So, please keep debating.

Question... Which city is really more expensive? Which has the higher rents? Does anyone know?

Thanks!

I love SF and NYC for totally different reasons. Trying to chose between one or the other is really difficult but I will go with SF.

Default San Francisco

When the poster said San Francisco has a small town feel. I know exactly what they meant. I've lived in San Francisco for over 20 years. I know everyone on my block and many in my neighborhood. We have a post office around the corner from my house. There is a 24 hour grocery store [1 block from my house] and a 24 hour Walgreens [3 blocks from my house]. There
is a dry cleaners on the corner of my block and a small corner store.
There are coffee shops, restaurants, banks, etc., etc. all within walking
distance from my house. Many stay and shop in the neighborhood since we have everything here. There is no need to get in a car and drive anywhere unless you must. Since the neighborhoods are self-contained and everyone
is friendly it is very much like living in a small town. The bonus is we are actually in a big city so we have the best of both worlds.
