I'm more inclined to agree with you, newyorkdoc. Harlem is way past the early stages of gentrification; and East Harlem is not good but has improved over the years.

As far as the crack epidemic is concerned, it's hard to say it was in a central or isolated region in NYC.

And crack is less talked about now and has been replaced by meth.

As for east Harlem, the crime rate may be higher (I'd have to check this) but to say it's "as bad as it ever was" is absurd.

Default Dc,bmore,detroit,philly,

Baltimore I think was hit harder then any other and is such in bad shape today the population has declined from 900+ thousand in the 70s and eraly 80s.Sense the city has un controlling crime problem people have been fleeing. All this crime stends from drugs that came into the city in the 80s for a city of only 600,000 to have 350 to 450 murders a year all most all related to drug gangs.I would have to say Baltimore and Detroit hit the hardest and maybe Philly sad thing that both Detroit and Bmore were decent citys before drugs the citys also I would say Washington Dc as well has been hit hard.

Latest census figures indicate that Baltimore has actually gained population in the past year meaning the drop has stopped. Although small, it says a lot. Some of Baltimore's neighborhoods were hit really hard with the epidemic along with some of the surrounding communities around it. But, there are plenty of healthy, great neighborhoods in the city that show no signs of the epidemic. To me, Baltimore is a decent city but then again, I am not doing crack in some alley or buying it from anyone. The idea that crack and drugs in general stop at the city line is absurd. There are many suburban areas where it is much more prevalent than in many city neighborhoods. The vice is amongst us all.

Im sorry, but Bmore is definently still a decent city. and the pop fell in the 50s, not due to drugs or crime and now it is stable, please get your facts straight

Crime is a problem but we've never had "350 to 450 murders a year." Yes, the murder rate is high but I think your perception is off (but unfortunately all to common). While Baltimore took it on the chin during the crack epidemic it still managed to retain a many of its honest citizens (hey, I'm typing this from the post-apocolyptic hell hole you seem to be describing!)
So yeah, it's had its problems but Baltimore remains a "decent city." I guess a city can have a remarkable crime problem and still have a lot of civic pride--hey, that's Baltimore. If you don't like it then move a few blocks.

Actually it was in the last 10 years that adolescents started wearing
baggy pants. Up until then the unsightly (I) was sported by middle age tradesman such as myself.

Pretty much any city with a large poor black populous, Dave Chappelle said Reagan invented crack.
So here are my nominees the cities with the 10 largest Black populations
New York
Chicago
Washington/Baltimore
Atlanta
Los Angeles
Philadelphia
Detroit
Houston
Dallas
St. Louis

I would also like to nominate Oakland, New Orleans, Newark and Cleveland too!

Any type of drug will decimate the community it's in. Without drug addiction, 90% of crime wouldn't happen, including everything from murder to car break ins
