Hello all we are currently battling on the decision of an east coast or west coast move. We think we have it narrowed down to two states Oregon or Vermont. We currently live in Wyoming. We are a young 25 year old couple with one child. Things we are concerned about and would like opinions on are as follows;

Which state has less wind? Casper, WY has got to be one of the windest places on earth and we want to escape it.

Which state has a better well-being? We want to be around happy healthy people.

Which state generally has better weather? Snow, rain, wind, and freezing temps are the norm in WY so we'd generally like more days of sunshine and moderate weather. Mostly we want no wind.

Which state has more outdoor activities? We are avid hunters of elk, deer, and all types of birds. We love to hike and camp and spend our free time outside.

Which state is more family oriented? We want a community feel and to be able to meet other parents. We love community activites and festivals.

Which state has less of a tax burden? Living in a state with no income tax and a 4% sales tax and one of the lowest property taxes has us currently spoiled.

Which state is more affordable over all compared to its conveniences? I'm big into eating organic farm fresh produce and grassfed meats. We'd like to keep our housing costs in a reasonable range as well ($150-250,00.00).

Which state is safer and has a better education? We plan on having more children so this will be important in the future.

And lastly, which state has better opportunities in the nursing field?

I know..so many questions but any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

I'd guess that while both states would work, the "moderate weather" and "job opportunities in nursing" would put Oregon ahead of VT.

I don't know, I'm not familiar with Vermont at all but only certain areas of Oregon have a lot of wind, it depends on where you live at. Need more details.

Oregon has a lot of hippies and health nuts, but there are good and bad people there like everywhere else.

Which state generally has better weather? Snow, rain, wind, and freezing temps are the norm in WY so we'd generally like more days of sunshine and moderate weather. Mostly we want no wind.

If sun shine is what you want then don't live in Oregon, at least not the western side of the state. Lots of gray gloomy days and rain. Very depressing. Eastern Oregon gets a lot of sun but that's because it's a desert. Not really any major cities on that side of the state.

Which state has more outdoor activities? We are avid hunters of elk, deer, and all types of birds. We love to hike and camp and spend our free time outside.

There are plenty of outdoor activities in Oregon, great camping, hunting, fishing, hiking etc... It's perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. I'mssureVVermont has some too, though I don't really know, never been there.

Which state is more family oriented? We want a community feel and to be able to meet other parents. We love community activites and festivals.

I don't know.... Oregon has a ton of community events and lots of family oriented activities, but I'm sure Vermont does as well.

Which state has less of a tax burden? Living in a state with no income tax and a 4% sales tax and one of the lowest property taxes has us currently spoiled.

Hmm.... Don't know. Oregon has no sales tax, but it does have pretty high property and income taxes. You can thank the liberal extremist loonys who run Oregon for that.

Which state is more affordable over all compared to its conveniences? I'm big into eating organic farm fresh produce and grassfed meats. We'd like to keep our housing costs in a reasonable range as well ($150-250,00.00).

I don't know..... In Oregon you can probably get a decenthouse and yard size ffor that amount. Don't know about Vermont, but I do believe that the New England region tends to be more expensive, but not sure about Vermont specifically. It also depends on where in Oregon you choose to live, some cost less than others. I'm sure Vermont is the same way.

Which state is safer and has a better education? We plan on having more children so this will be important in the future.

Can't speak for Vermont on this one, but overall Oregon is pretty safe. Violent crime does exist of course but it's not very common compared to other parts of the country. Murders and other such crimes are rather rare overall. The schools in Oregon are not very good and I would recommend that you look at private schooling if you can afford it. The schools here are not '' bad '' in the sense of gangs or inner city type schools, it's nothing like that. The schools in Oregon just tend to be under funded and have low test scores.

And lastly, which state has better opportunities in the nursing field?

I honestly have no idea.

I know..so many questions but any help at all would be greatly appreciated!
My responses in bold. Just do your research and visit each place if you can and decide for yourself. Also what state would allow you to be closer to family? That is something that you need to consider too.

Also keep in mind that I am from Oregon originally but have never been to Vermont, so can't comment on it much. I'm sure some people can though. You should ask around the Oregon and Vermont section for additional advice.

Good luck!

Both offer what you want, but Vermont may have weaker job choices. Oregon is probably better tax-wise with its lack of sales tax, even though its other taxes are high, Vermont has somewhat high taxes of all types. Both are great outdoor-wise, though Oregon has a lot more variety and the scenery is different.

Neither state is particularly sunny, though the high desert of Oregon might be.
