I've never been to Salt Lake City, other than passing through on the interstate... but it seems like out of these selected cities it would be the safest.
I can tell you this much... Las Vegas shouldn't even be an option here. Definitely not a safe or peaceful city. Phoenix seems a bit iffy too.
1. Salt Lake City = Never been there, but just seems like the obvious choice. I never see SLC in any high crime statistics.
2. Denver
3. Portland
4. Seattle
5. San Diego
6. Sacramento
7. Phoenix
8. Los Angeles
9. Las Vegas
10. San Francisco = Spent a lot of time in the City and was witness to many crimes. Also, usually ranks pretty high in crime statistics. Still my second favorite city in the US though.
I could easily swap a few of these around, but the number 1 and 10 spots are pretty concrete imo.
Just did a few searches on city data and found that Phoenix and Sacramento ranked higher than San Francisco in 2012. Not by much though. I know the op said just overall crime but I included the murders for that year. Would like to see 2013 figures.
In terms of murder rate, Portland is the safest city on that list and San Francisco is the least safe.
2012 Murder Rate (per 100k people)
Portland 3.3
San Diego 3.5
Seattle 3.7
Las Vegas 5.1
Denver 6.2
Sacramento 7.1
Salt Lake City 8.0
Los Angeles 8.1
Phoenix 8.3
San Francisco 8.4
