I think you'd love Arizona. The weather and low cost of living are exactly what you're looking for, and AZ is a gun owner's paradise.

You will love Arizona. Very small business friendly. My father is currently opening up a gun store and I would guarantee he wouldn't do this if the climate didn't exist and the support for guns to do so. Many places to go shoot indoors within the valley and if you're on the outskirts of town you can always go shoot behind a mountain.

If you are Tea Party, you will definitely not feel alone. My TP father has a multitude of friends from his part of the political spectrum. The extreme right is alive in Arizona, and the tabloids like to prove that.

Most of us are Libertarians who would rather deal with the Republicans than the Democrats... the so-called "I don't care what you do in your personal life but stay out of my wallet" mantra. Even the Democrats I've met here don't seem so extreme... and you will notice that even more since you're from the Bay Area!

SF is about a twelve hour drive away from Phoenix (maybe a little more)... meaning at that point the majority of California is within your reach if you do get homesick.

Who knows, being stuck around all those far right conservatives may make you a little more liberal
The average rank and file people of Arizona aren't nearly as far right as the politicians. There is a definite disconnect.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio would be fired or forced to resign for his policies in California or Oregon if he tried to pull what he does in Arizona. The fact that he's in a promenent position in Arizona shows how right leaning the state is.

Arizona is definitely more right leaning than California but there are states that are far more conservative than Arizona. Believe me many people in Arizona are frustrated with current political climate and I think some changes are in order. There are so many factors into why the current legislature has leaned so far to the right in the last 5 years or so that I could write a book about it. Arpaio barely won his last election and if he ran today he probably wouldn't win but then again I thought he would lose the last couple of elections. All I know is most of the people aren't fire breathing tea party extremists. Unfortunately they have taken a foot hold in the state legislature. I think changes are on the horizon though.

Don't worry about AZ's social policies about Hispanics or homosexuals because there aren't any. The controversial part of the immigration bill was struck down by the feds and the attention seeking bill that was largely thought to be aimed at gays was vetoed.

He is in a prominent position in one county's rural law enforcement and has always been very active planning stunts to get headlines. Phoenix and some of the other large suburbs have their own police departments. During the height of his immigration raids on businesses both the then mayor of Phoenix and the Police Chief of Mesa openly opposed the Sherriff's Department's raids and the PHXPD said they were against checking immigration status.
