Middle-age couple looking for artist community in Los Angeles area (live, place)

Hi, I'm a writer and partner is a painter. We are looking for an artistic, creative community in the Los Angeles area, maybe a live/work loft or similar. We're middle age, so not looking for a party place. Just a quiet, creative atmosphere, either downtown or maybe Venice, Santa Monica. Not sure. Would love to hear pros and cons of the area and what they have to offer. Obviously looking for safe, reasonable rent. Will probably lease first. Thanks!
