Near takeoff or landing, you can get a great view of a city/metro area. Both daytime and nighttime offer unique, but different perspectives.

Which City do you think is most impressive? The massive skylines of New York or Chicago, the endless sea of LA, the combo of dense cities, bridges and nature of the Bay Area, etc?

LA at night, flying low over the city towards the airport. From the window, you see a grid of lights stretching endlessly into the horizon. You realize the folks on the other side of the plane are seeing the same thing, stretching out forever in the opposite direction. It's impressive.

Yeah, LA is very impressive in size. Chicago and NYC too, which also benefit from their huge skylines. I think the Bay Area is pretty impressive as well, but it's smaller to begin with and doesn't have as much of an impressive/massive blob of development, seeing as the bay is right in the middle of everything, and along with the hills causes development to stretch out a great deal from north to south.

Yeah SF by day is equally impressive. On a clear day, the water in the bay is incredibly blue and the the city itself, with its blocks of painted Victorians is impossibly bright like the white-washed towns in Andalusia. Along with the crisp orange of the Golden Gate bridge, it's much more colorful and vivid than most cities from the air.

NYC because it's the correct answer. LA is impressive too but for reasons that are unpopular on these forums.

Hard for me to pick one.

NYC, Chicago, and LA all are pretty impressive for size. NYC for the density and LA for the combo of mountains, city/sprawl, and ocean. Chicago with the skyline and lakefront setting.

Honolulu is very cool with all the high rises, mountains, beaches, water, and Diamond Head.

Miami with the city, beaches, and water.

San Diego when you land and see the contrast with Tijuana and fly right by the downtown skyscrapers. Take off is pretty cool too heading up the coast or heading east and see the quick transition to desert.

Never really was that impressed with the Bay Area though, maybe it's the direction I flew in and out of but most of the time I just saw the southern portion of the bay and the sprawl of the Peninsula, East bay, or South Bay.

First time I flew in to LA, I looked out the window when we were still 30 minutes from landing, and saw a grid of lights below me. Being 30 minutes away, I figured "maybe that's Vegas." The grid just kept going, all the way to LAX 30 minutes later. That was my "holy crap...LA is big" moment.
