Ok, but if you say "DMV" people will assume Department of Motor Vehicles. I have never heard the term "DMV" and lived in the DC area for five years.
It's an acronym that's been around since the mid-2000s and has been popularized by the DC area's music community, most especially the GoGo and Hip Hop communities. Even the regional media and local real estate market refer to the metro area as the DMV at times.
