Really? The term has been popular since I got here and that was in 2005.

I lived in North Bethesda from 2003-2007, and never heard the term until now.

It's an acronym that's been around since the mid-2000s and has been popularized by the DC area's music community, most especially the GoGo and Hip Hop communities. Even the regional media and local real estate market refer to the metro area as the DMV at times.
