As you can see by these two graphs, government spending has only gone up over time. The second graph shows there are some declines, but those are mostly due to wars, & the line of best fit is on an upward slope. the only times the government has shrunk, it rebounded & grew back bigger
DC is definitely very unique. But the government will never aggressively cut back, the federal government has never shrunk in the history of the US, it has only ever grown. This is why DC is such a safe market for people, because there is no bubble that could pop like there is in NYC or SF. But like you said, the region is becoming more diverse, including having the headquarters for Hilton, Marriott, Lockheed Martin, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Northrop Grumman, Gannet, Booz Allen, Host Hotels, & Discovery. It really is amazing how many huge corporations are located in the DC region that no one knows about

Beginning Dec. 20, 2015 Qantas will begin operating service between SYD and SFO, expanding the airlines' joint network to another key market for business and leisure customers.Services will initially operate on peak days and ramp up to six times per week in January 2016. Pending regulatory approvals, this expansion represents the natural evolution of the collaboration between American and Qantas, with revenue-sharing and other agreements that provide the airlines with a platform for closer commercial ties and an even more seamless customer experience on routes between North America and Australia/New Zealand. The closer and more integrated relationship also provides opportunities for future growth into trans-Pacific markets not currently served by either airline, such as New Zealand.
Wanted to share the quality addition (Qantas) to San Francisco International. That marks the re-entry to the San Francisco Bay Area market for this foreign bird.

I'm surprised this isn't already happening - it's on the coast, after all. If they wanted to add a new flight, wouldn't that be logical?
They used to have Qantas a few years ago but that was disbanded for the new Dallas/Fort Worth International route which would feed the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and most points in the United States east of there and would be supportive with the American Airlines codeshare system (Oneworld Alliance).
They're finally bringing it back, it was never a low-yield route. San Francisco Bay Area residents are a massive boon to Oceania's tourism sector (from this side of the planet at least).
They *were* flying out of SFO but because of their codesharing with American, they relocated to American's hub in Dallas.
