Ontario, home to the friendliest people in the world, second only to Manitoba.

Are there a lot of picturesque smaller cities in Ontario?

Orillia, Niagara-on-the-Lake, St. Mary's and Cornwall are a few cute towns. Kingston has around 100,000 people, and it's gorgeous.

Province of Ontario vs. New England states

Location: New England

Cities: Tie (but small towns are nicer in New England)

Climate: Pretty close

Diversity: Ontario (Toronto is one of the world's most diverse cities, more diverse than Boston even)

Safety: Ontario (almost always a no-brainer between places in Canada and the US)

Education: New England

Economy: New England

Culture: New England (much more unique culturally)

Things to see/do: New England

Quality of life: Tie

Cost of living: New England

Scenery/beauty: New England

Where would you rather live? Ontario

Where would you rather visit as first time? New England

I think this is pretty accurate.

Ontario versus all of New England? This isn't really close -- and I've spent my fair share of time in Ontario, and a bit of time in New England.

I prefer the states of New England on scenery, quality of life, education, tourism and education. No offence to Ontario, but New England is right up there as one of the most appealing regions in North America. It has the Atlantic Ocean, a couple of mountain ranges, and some very unique cities and villages. There are only two areas that Ontario -might- have an upper hand, safety and economy. Even that is questionable.

New England has the Maine coastline… the White Mountains in New Hampshire… the rushing rivers and rolling green hills of Vermont. Outstanding architecture and gorgeous small towns. And while Toronto and Boston probably cancel each other out (great cities both), I would argue that the combination of Providence/Newport/Burlington/Portland outdoes Ottawa/Kingston/London/Niagara (thought Ottawa is a great city, and is a touch New England itself).

I think a more fair comparison would be Ontario vs. Massachusetts. Or the Canadian Maritimes vs. New England.

No because Ontario is a very large province, by far much larger than New England states.

.
I think Ottawa (one level below Toronto) is a lot better than any of the second tier cities in New England below Boston, but after that the advantage clearly goes to New England.
