It will be interesting to watch how long it takes Houston to catch Chicago, especially with the big push to densify downtown (and the whole inner loop) right now. And NO Houston has not annexed a single piece of land since the 1990's....these are actual population and density increases.
After the 2010 estimate, Houston trailed Chicago by 596,147 residents but after the 2013 estimate, Houston trailed Chicago by 522,868 residents. This represented a gain on Chicago of 73,279 residents in this time frame.

At that rate, assuming nothing changes and numerical gains remain the same, it would still take until 2035 at the earliest before they would be roughly equal in population.
But, of course, the only thing constant in life is change.

In terms of physical size Houston is more comparable to Cook Country than it is to Chicago.

Not anytime soon. 500,000 people is still a lot. If the same number of people were added each year to each city (35,202 for Houston and 5862 for Chicago), then Houston would pass Chicago in 2031.

With the Exxon deal there is a lot speculation that Houston could be annexing 150-250 sq miles - with this it would blow by Chicago and be on the heals of LA.
But then you would go there and be like, where is the city...
City limits are mostly absurd- Philadelphia would surpass the population of present Day Houston in a land area smaller than Dallas in terms of population
MSA and UA are mostly better metrics than city limits
