Hi, I'm just curious to get peoples opinions. From my experience it's very difficult to judge a city's music scene until you've lived there for at least a year. A lot of music I listen to is older, obviously that wouldn't have a particular effect on a local music scene, I like folk, rock, blues, country, soul, jazz, and jam bands. Cities I think would fit me would be Nashville, Austin, Raleigh, Memphis, Louisville, etc. I'm proned towards the south because of its rich musically driven cultural heritage. But again, I have no first hand experience.
My favorite artists include

There is still a very vibrant folkie/r&b/rock scene in the The Mid-Hudson Valley/Catskill Mountain Area of NY.
Woodstock/Bearsville are still connected to the 1960's -1970s hippie era.
less than 2 hours t NYC away by train.
There is also a very active Folkie Scene in the ozarks of Missouri and Arkansas
Every musician I know there has no trouble getting shows - are you talking cover bands or real (I'm sorry, original material) bands? DFW has a really anemic scene for the size of the city. For TX, it's Austin, and then the rest; sure, it may well be overrated nationally overall due to SXSW and so on, but it's still the best place for catching shows (this person wants to SEE them, remember?) in the state by far.
